I Was Planning Our Wedding When He Told Me He Had a Wife Chapter 06

The morning of the wedding was all blue sky and soft light. Mom wore a tailored crimson dress, her tiredness carefully tucked away behind a layer of powder and a steady smile.

To every guest, every well-wisher, she beamed and said the same line, “My Evelyn is so blessed. She found a man who’s not only accomplished, but so thoughtful…”

Yes, he knew how to be thoughtful. In our six years together, he’d treated my mother flawlessly. In the eyes of our elders, he was steady, well-mannered, reliable.

If only he hadn’t married that eighteen-year-old girl when he was twenty-one. Today, I should have been the happiest bride…

My throat tightened. “Mom, please don’t overdo it.”

“I’m fine, sweetheart,” she said softly, her gaze lingering on the white silk of my dress. “You look… you look absolutely beautiful today.”

The officiant on stage was delivering his well-wishes. Jason stood beside me in his sharp suit. Everything proceeded smoothly until the moment right before we exchanged rings.

The doors to the banquet hall burst open. A frail-looking girl stumbled in. Her voice was weak. “Jason… I’m… I’m scared…” Before she could finish, she collapsed to the floor.

My heart instantly clenched. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the strained smile on Mom’s face. I suppressed all my churning emotions.

Seeing Jason instinctively start to move off the stage, I tightly grabbed his hand. I looked up at him, pleading almost pathetically, “Jason… just twenty minutes… Let’s finish this ceremony. Someone will take her to the hospital.”

“My mom’s watching… Don’t let her think… I chose the wrong man… Please, just this once. Let’s finish the act, okay?” I tried my best to squeeze out a smile uglier than a cry.

Jason’s brow was tightly furrowed as he questioned me, “Chloe could be seriously hurt, and you’re asking me to stand here and perform for twenty more minutes? Is this wedding show more important to you than someone’s life?”

His words hit like poisoned needles, puncturing the thin shell I was clinging to. Before I could even process it, he wrenched his hand free with a violent jerk. I crashed into the champagne tower behind us, overturning it.

And then he was moving past me, his steps quick and sure as he cut through the crowd toward where she lay collapsed on the floor.

“Jason!” I called out to him with all my might. I endured the cramping pain in my abdomen from the impact. “If you walk out that door today, you and I are finished. For life.”

Dead silence filled the room. But he merely turned his profile, tossing out a cold, hard sentence, “I don’t even know who you are right now.” Then, without looking back, he picked up Chloe Smith and walked away.

The officiant stood awkwardly in place. My legs buckled. The floor met me hard, cold through the layers of my dress. And deep in my abdomen, a low, insistent pull tightened into a raw, seizing pain.

Until the pristine white of my gown was stained red… Accompanied by a dull thud.

That thin, frail hand, the one that had wanted to entrust me firmly to “happiness” before leaving, let go.

…

Not long after the car started moving, Chloe Smith came to. She leaned weakly against Jason’s shoulder, saying things like, “I didn’t mean to, I was just so scared…”

He absentmindedly replied, “Hmm.” Suddenly, the memory of the last look Evelyn had given him flashed before his eyes. His chest tightened, a swift, unexpected punch of something. But then it was gone, smothered by a surge of pure irritation.

Women were so troublesome. Making a mountain out of a molehill. Did she think human life was that cheap?

His phone suddenly vibrated. He answered, tone impatient. “What?”

On the other end, his close friend Chase Williams’s voice held rare panic. “Jason, at the venue… it’s bad. Something’s happened.”
