I Was Just A Passerby Carrying His Twin Heirs Chapter 03

The Metropolitan Defense Command Base Headquarters Compound was located in the core of the old city district—a standalone gray-and-white office building, guards standing dead straight, and razor wire stretched along the perimeter walls.

I stood outside the iron gates, craning my neck to look up. It sure looked intimidating.

But that was none of my business.

I came here today for one single purpose.

Find Grant Vance.

Get the money.

Two thousand eight hundred dollars.

I wore my cleanest white T-shirt, faded jeans, canvas shoes, and threw my hair up into a high ponytail.

When I stepped toward the entrance, the guard put out an arm to stop me.

“Good day, ma’am. Do you have an appointment?”

I told him no.

He flashed a standard, scripted smile.

“My apologies, but without an appointment, you cannot enter the administrative area—”

I pulled out my phone and shoved the photo of the business card right in front of his face.

“Grant Vance’s card. His private line is on it. I have business with him, but I’ve been calling for two days and nobody picked up.”

The guard froze.

He probably verified the authenticity of the card.

After hesitating for a few seconds, he picked up the intercom phone and whispered a few words.

When he hung up, the way he looked at me became noticeably subtle.

“Please wait a moment. The chief’s aide will be right down.”

I nodded and waited in the lobby.

Soldiers in uniform kept walking back and forth around me, their steps crisp and synchronized. They looked at me like I was a stray cat that had accidentally wandered into military headquarters.

I didn’t care.

Even stray cats have the right to collect debts.

About five minutes later, the elevator doors slid open.

A young man wearing black-rimmed glasses stepped out. He was tall, lean, with a stern expression, his uniform pressed flat without a single wrinkle—clearly someone used to serving high-ranking officers.

He walked up to me quickly and scanned me up and down.

“Hello, I am Chief Vance’s aide, Logan White.”

“May I ask… you mentioned having a financial dispute with the chief?”

His tone was cautious, like he was defusing a package he wasn’t sure would explode.

I nodded.

“Yeah. He owes me money.”

Logan’s expression didn’t flinch, but I caught the finger adjusting his glasses stiffen up.

“Would it be convenient to tell me… what kind of financial transaction this was?”

I thought about how to phrase it decently.

“Put it this way.”

I stared at him, pronouncing every single word carefully.

“Two weeks ago, your boss and I had a… partnership. Now there are some follow-up costs from that partnership, and I’m here to go fifty-fifty with him.”
