I Was A Cold‑Blooded Gold Digger, But I Pretended To Bow Out Gracefully Chapter 09

The gentleness in his voice slowly faded, replaced by the old tone he used when negotiating with me.

“The villa, the sports car, the shares. I’ll give them all to you. And I’ll make up your study–abroad budget ten

times over.”

I suddenly found it funny.

Even his proposal sounded like a merger.

“Felix, do you think I still care about those things?”

He frowned, as if he didn’t understand.

“All these years, your girls came and went, and everyone in the city knew that Mr. Sterling had a well–behaved Sienna by his side.”

“But you never knew.”

“Every day I woke up wondering if a new girl would show up, how much prettier she was than me, how much younger, how much better at acting spoiled.”

I watched his brow draw together. “Felix, even if you married me, then what? If another Daisy, another

woman, appears beside you, what am I supposed to do?”

“There won’t be another.” He said it with certainty.

“If I marry, I won’t…”

“You also said before that you would never let me suffer.”

I laughed softly.

His face finally darkened completely.

Felix stood there, his back straight, but the wavering in his eyes was something I had learned to read after five years by his side.

“Sienna, I’m serious about you.”

I looked at him.

I suddenly remembered that evening years ago, when I crouched at the school gate, crying helplessly.

He reached out, helped me up, and slipped a check into my bag. That check saved my life.

Without Felix, I might have been dragged back and married off to some man in the middle of nowhere, trapped in that sunless place forever.

So I was grateful to him.

I admitted that.

But over the years, I had also had enough.

He pulled me out of the abyss, then put me in another cage.

The cage was made of gold and studded with diamonds. Everyone said it was a blessing. But a cage was

still a cage.

I had spent five years inside it, learning every trick of fighting for affection and attacking rivals, only to

realize now that I didn’t like any of it.

“Felix, you helped me, and I remember that. I admit I owe you in this life. But you can’t use that to make me keep cleaning up your messes forever.”

I stepped back, and the crack of the door narrowed.

“Mr. Sterling, I hope everyone you meet from now on treats you sincerely.”

The light stung my eyes.

I rubbed them and sniffled, finding that I didn’t actually want to cry.
