I Used To Cling To Him At Night, Now I Turn My Back Chapter 04

My phone rang. It was Callan.

“Are you home?” His voice sounded tired.

“Yeah.”

There was a brief pause before he spoke again.

“Something came up at work. I might be home late.”

I had just turned to the orange glow of the sunset outside the floor-to-ceiling windows when the floating comments covered my view.

[The male lead and female lead look so good together. Mature power couple vibes. You just know they’re gonna keep talking over dinner.]

[Wait, isn’t today their wedding anniversary though?]

[Anniversary? Please. Does he look like someone who cares? Being with the female lead matters way more.]

Callan was the kind of person who forgot his own birthday.

Of course he wouldn’t remember our anniversary.

After we got married, I was always the one who went all out planning everything.

It was one of the few days each year when I could openly stay by his side without making excuses.

After our candlelit dinner, I’d usually cling to him until sunrise.

Before I could say anything, Mrs. Cheney knocked on the door.

“Mrs. Holloway, the balloons are ready. Should I decorate everything the way we planned?”

“Take it all down.” I said.

She blinked in confusion. “What?”

I tightened my grip on my phone.

Callan heard every word through the speaker.

“Let the air out of the balloons. And put everything away.”

I took a slow breath.

“You should get back to work. And remember to eat.”

That exact moment, my stomach let out a long “grrrowl” and betrayed me.

The call was still on speaker. The line went quiet for a second.

“Do you want me to pick up your favor—”

I cut him off. “It’s fine. You don’t have to come home.”

What was the point? By the time he finished work, every flower shop and bakery would already be sold out of everything I loved.

The floating comments kept updating me on their day.

[The female lead’s so sweet. She accidentally spilled his coffee, then immediately handed him a handkerchief.]

[She’s so polite too. She knows he’s married and keeps just the right distance.]

[Exactly. Not like that whiny giant baby who can’t stop clinging to him. And that whole forbidden uncle-niece thing she’s got going on? So gross.]

[He looked away from her. He’s totally flustered. How much longer is this slow burn going to last?]

[Forget morals. Girl, just make your move already!]

I shoved my earbuds in and started scrolling through short dramas instead.

I stopped reading the comments.

The drama had reached its next turning point.

The male lead stood outside the female lead’s door, pleading.

“You were never anyone’s replacement. You’re the only person I’ve ever loved.”

“Please… love me again.”

I was so absorbed in the scene that I barely noticed the knocking at the door.

When I scrolled down, a screen full of ads finally pulled me back to reality.

I looked up from my phone. A familiar face stood right in front of me.

Callan’s expression was dark. His deep eyes were locked on me.

I jumped and ripped my earbuds out.

The floating comments instantly exploded.

[???]

[The male lead and female lead were finally getting somewhere!! Why did he suddenly go home??]
