“Those concerns are valid,” he said. “Because I personally destroyed my own marriage and hurt the most important person in my life.”

The host was visibly stunned.

Everyone was stunned.

Liam didn’t look at the host. He kept his eyes fixed on the camera, as if speaking to an audience of one.

“I was arrogant. I treated marriage like a business contract, and my wife like a role to be filled. I was so focused on expanding my company that I failed to nurture the one person who gave me a sense of home. I personally signed the documents that allowed her to leave. It was the single stupidest decision of my life.”

He spoke slowly, his voice raw with a sincerity I had never heard from him before.

He paused, and for a moment, I felt like he knew I was watching.

“Ava, if you can see this, I need you to know that I love you. I loved you then, I love you now, and I will always love you. This isn’t about the children. It’s not about the Walker name. It is only, and has only ever been, about you.”

“I got so much wrong. But I will spend the rest of my life making it right. No matter how long you need, I will wait.”

Finally, his voice dropped to a near whisper.

“I’m sorry.”

The studio remained silent for a long time after he finished.

I stared at his image on the screen, tears streaming down my face.

My mother sat beside me and handed me a tissue, her voice uncharacteristically gentle.

“Well, at least the boy knows what he did wrong. If you want to forgive him, I won’t stand in your way.”

After the broadcast ended, my phone buzzed.

It was a text from Liam.

“Did I pass the test?”

I stared at the message for a long time, then finally typed a reply.

“A little dramatic.”

His response came back instantly.

“From now on, I’ll only be dramatic for you.”

My heart gave a little flutter.
