He had grown used to the soft glow of the lamp she left on in the living room for his late returns.

Used to the glass of water that appeared outside his study door, always at the perfect temperature.

Used to the quiet presence of her in the same room, lost in one of her art books.

He had always thought they had time.

Time to slowly, carefully, turn a contract into a home.

Now, this email informed him that she had taken the money and left without a backward glance.

It wasn’t anger that hit him first. It was a cold, sharp spike of panic.

“Back to the estate. Now,” he snapped at the driver.

The driver pushed the sedan to its limit.

When he burst through the doors, the house was silent. The living room was dark. There was no lamp, and there was no Ava.

“Ava?”

He called out once. The silence answered him.

He took the stairs two at a time and threw open the bedroom door.

Her side of the closet was empty.

Only the black card and the single, damning note remained on the vanity.

“Where is she?” he demanded, turning to the butler who had appeared in the doorway.

The butler flinched at his tone.

“Sir, the former madam left three days ago.”

“Where did she go?”

“I… I don’t know, sir.”

Liam stood frozen in the doorway for a long moment.

His phone rang. It was his chief counsel.

He answered, his voice dangerously low.

“Mr. Walker,” the attorney began cautiously, “regarding the divorce documents between you and your ex-wife, they have now been officially filed—”

“Where are the documents?”

“At my office, sir.”

“I’m on my way.”

He hung up and strode out of the room. As he passed through the living room, he saw a copy of the agreement on the coffee table.

The signature page was on top.

His name was on the left.

Hers was beside it.

Liam stared down at that page, and for the first time, he truly understood.

He had personally signed away the one person who mattered.
