I Took a Late Night Driving Job and Found My Ex Waiting Chapter 12

On surgery day, Nathan sat in the waiting room without a word.

Olivia teased him, “You look like a freshman going to his first job interview.”

Nathan blinked, remembering his first interview after college—right after his family had lost everything.

Emily had stayed by his side the whole time. A painfully shy girl who found her courage when someone she loved needed her.

Emily wasn’t brave by nature, but she became brave for the people she loved.

This coat—she’d bought it for him. He reached into the pocket and found something inside.

Two pieces of hard candy. And a small note.

[Don’t be nervous. Pass or fail, I’ll be right here with you.]

Emily’s handwriting. His hand trembled. He’d only worn this coat once. Then Emily left, and he never touched anything she’d given him again.

He stared at the yellowed note and held it tight. Emily, I saw it. You can’t break your promise. Whether you come out of this or not, I’ll be right there with you.

The surgery light went dark. He shot to his feet.

The doctor stepped out. “Family?”

“I am!” Nathan said without hesitation.

The doctor looked at him. “Come with me.”

“The surgery was a success. But she needs a long recovery. These are the care guidelines, please read them carefully.”

For a moment, Nathan felt lightheaded.

When I woke, my hand was held tight in his.

“Emily.” Through the haze, I heard him say, “I found your note. My interview passed. Yours did too. You said you’d always be here.”

His grip tightened. I nodded. “I will.”

[THE END]
