I Took a Late Night Driving Job and Found My Ex Waiting Chapter 08

“Emily…” Nathan’s voice cracked.

I stepped back instinctively.

“Emily!” He grabbed my wrist. I tried to pull free—no use.

“Is this why? Because you were sick?”

I looked to Olivia for help. She shrugged. “I didn’t tell him. He overheard.”

“But—”

“Emily!” Nathan’s jaw tightened. “You can stop worrying about other people for once.”

He pulled out his phone, his tone almost pleading, “Yes, this is urgent. Please.”

Olivia took my hand. “Come on. I got you the best specialist in the city.”

They brought me back to the city where they lived. I went through every test. But the doctor shook his head. “Too late. Only a bone marrow transplant can save her now.”

“How long would that take?” Nathan pressed.

“That depends on luck. The one she missed before—that was already rare. Some patients never find a match.”

Nathan’s fists clenched. I sat up in bed and smiled at him. “See? I told you. Just let me go to hospice.”

I swung my legs off the bed, but he pulled me back. “What if there’s a chance?”

“There isn’t.” I looked at him. “Nathan, I know how rare a match is. So don’t waste your time. I got to see you one last time, and Olivia too. I’m happy.”

He pulled me into a tight embrace. I felt him trembling. “Don’t give up… I have money now. Give me a chance. Please…”

I looked at him and wiped his tears away. Shook my head.

“Emily…” He stared at me in disbelief.

“Nathan, treatment is brutal. I don’t want to go through that again.”

He went still.

“Let me leave with some dignity, okay?”

His eyes reddened. I took his hand. “We might not have much time, but we can still do a lot. A month is enough. Isn’t that better than lying in a hospital bed waiting to die?”

“No.” Nathan’s answer was sharp.

“Nathan…”

“No.” His voice didn’t waver. “You’re not dying. Even if the chance is slim, we treat it.”

“But—”

“I’m begging you…” He grabbed both my hands, his grip almost desperate, and looked up at me with red-rimmed eyes. “Don’t give up, Emily. Please. Don’t give up.”

“Why are you so set on this?” My eyes burned. “I tried. I did the most aggressive treatment. It was hell, and it didn’t even work. Please. Don’t make me go through that again.”

Nathan shook his head. “It’s different now. I’ll put every dollar I have into your treatment. It’ll work this time. You’re going to live to be a hundred…”

His voice broke at the end.

I took a deep breath. “And if I still choose to give up? Can you stop me?”

Nathan froze.
