Before I finished speaking, a harsh slap landed hard on my cheek.

My head snapped to the side, my mouth filling with the metallic taste of blood.

I heard only the trembling vibration in Julian Vane’s voice.

“Clara Sterling, what kind of madness is this now? What does this have to do with Sienna?”

Sienna…

He called her so intimately.

My heart throbbed with pain.

I should have known long ago, but I kept deceiving myself.

Two people who supposedly disliked each other at first had somehow grown closer and closer.

“If you dare to be bad to Clara, I will never let you off!”

“I will love her for a lifetime and give her a home. I won’t let you take her away!”

Those quarrels eventually turned into a subconscious chemistry between them.

When traveling, Julian would naturally order a table full of dishes Sienna Brooks liked.

Forgetting that I couldn’t eat spicy food.

I would excitedly prepare a birthday gift for Sienna.

Only to witness her tying a hand-knitted scarf around Julian’s neck the very next day.

When they said in unison.

That this was just people who love me getting along for my sake.

What a clumsy lie it was.

Yet, I was stupid enough to believe it.

Now, I touched my swollen cheek, suppressed the heartache, and met Julian’s obscure gaze,

“Whether it’s true or not doesn’t matter anymore. It should have ended between us long ago.”

As soon as I finished, the woman on the bed, looking as if she were about to collapse, finally broke down.

Sienna scrambled off the bed, her face-no longer hidden by the suit jacket-covered in tear stains,

“Clara, I was just momentarily possessed. I was wrong. Please forgive me. You can hit me or scold me…”

But in her panic, her hand grabbed my hem and brushed against the scar left by my previous miscarriage.

The second I instinctively pushed her away.

I was shoved violently and stumbled backward.

I stumbled and crashed into the IV stand, the hook sinking into my back.

Sharp pain swept over me, and I felt terribly weak all at once.

Julian pursed his lips but still chose to pick up Sienna.

The unbearable pain grew worse, and the terror of losing a child gripped my heart once more.

Trembling, I pulled a prenatal check-up report from my bag and held it out to Julian,

“I’m pregn@nt… please call a doctor…”

Julian instinctively moved forward, but then he heard Sienna’s fragile cry of pain in his arms.

Disgust instantly flooded his eyes,

“What are you faking, Clara Sterling? When I lost my baby years ago, the doctor said it would be hard for you

to ever have children again!”

“Consider this a lesson. Don’t bully Sienna again!”

He slapped my hand away.

The snow-white report fluttered to the ground, stained crimson.

My heart sank with it.

Julian didn’t stay; he even slammed the door shut and locked it from the outside.

He ignored the growing pool of red beneath me.

He ignored my final plea for help.

The moment the heartbeat inside me stopped, it felt as if my heart died with it.

When I woke up again, the doctor looked at me with pity and regret,

“Ms. Sterling, I’m sorry. I’ve lost this baby too.”

My heart felt abruptly hollow.

Tears blurred my eyes as I dialed Arthur Sterling’s number with trembling fingers,

“Dad, Julian and Sienna are together. I want a divorce.”

The voice on the other end sounded as if it had aged decades in an instant,

“Okay. Don’t be afraid. I’ll find help for your mother’s illness myself. Don’t wrong yourself for the sake of the

family.”

That thread of care and tenderness broke my resolve, and I wailed into the phone.

Even after Arthur Sterling picked me up from the hospital and we bid a quiet farewell to my lost child.

I had no heart to dwell on the explanatory messages from Julian and Sienna.

The successive betrayals and losses had left me physically and mentally exhausted; I only wanted to end

everything completely.

When I arrived at Julian’s office with the divorce papers, just as I was about to push the door open.

The voices from inside chilled me to the bone.
