My temple twitched. I cleared my throat.

“What did she say?”

I’d already guessed.

Silence for a few seconds. Miles pressed his lips togetlier, his voice carrying a tiny, almost

imperceptible hurt.

“She said she heard you say you’re only with me to piss off Carter. That you don’t really like me.

My temper snapped. “Bullshit!”

I frowned at the screen. “Don’t listen to her crap. I—”

Miles nodded. “I know. You’re not that kind of person.”

The words caught in my throat. I looked at him and sniffed. “Then why are you upset?”

His throat bobbed. A long pause later, his voice came out husky. “I’m not upset. I just feel a little upset, that’s all.”

I bit down hard on my grin.

Miles stared at the screen. His eyes lit up, hopeful. “Today you went to the amusement park with me. But Carter used to talk about taking you. All the time.”

“Rowan, am I being a little petty?”

I shook my head, but inside I was melting. “You’re jealous. I went with Carter-sure. But that’s over. From now on, it’s just you. Every place. A thousand times over.”

Miles’s eyes brightened again. He gazed at the screen, quiet, almost hypnotized.

His stare made my face heat up. I noticed the dewy look of his lips and remembered thinking the first time I saw him that he looked so kissable.

So I cleared my throat.

“Carter and I never did the Ferris wheel. You know the legend, right? No classes tomorrow

afternoon. Wanna go?”

Miles’s mouth curved. He nodded.

The next day, I was giddy all day, then got hit with awful news around noon.

“Two finance majors got into a fight. Roommates, I think. Something about one stealing the other’s boyfriend. Both crazy hot…”

My heart seized. I.sprinted toward where they said it happened. Wind roared in my ears. Cold sweat

soaked my back.

Carter had trained in boxing since we were kids. Miles was fit, but he was pale and lean. If Carter

had hurt him—

The rock in my chest dissolved the second I saw Carter pinned.

Miles had him pressed against the wall with one hand. Carter’s face was red with fury, still spewing

curses.

“You piece of shit! I treated you like a brother, and you go after my girl? Just die!”

“You knew damn well she was mine. No wonder you barely say a word to anyone-but the second

someone brings up Rowan, suddenly you’ve got plenty to say. You’ve been plotting this the whole time, you backstabbing bastard!”

My mouth twitched. I walked up. Carter saw me and his eyes instantly went red, like he was the one who’d been wronged.

“Rowan…”

I circled Miles, checking every inch. Only when I was sure he wasn’t hurt did I exhale.

Miles, though, looked nervous when he saw me, afraid I’d blame him. He let go and stood beside me, lips tight.
