I Saw Our Remaining Meetings Dropped From 31441 To 9 Chapter 02

For the first nineteen years of my life, I thought those numbers never changed.

I’ve been able to see them above people’s heads since I was little.

As a kid, I didn’t know what they meant. Eventually I figured it out—they’re the remaining times I’ll meet that person.

Dad could stay with me until he’s eighty-eight. Mom until eighty-nine.

And Carter, the cute boy next door? He could stay until I’m old.

Because the number above his head was impossibly long—longer than everyone else I’ve ever seen put together.

When I was five, I asked him, “Carter, what does it mean to be together for 31,441 days?”

He scratched his head, ran to ask his mom, and came back with this smug little grin. “It means we’re gonna be together a really long time. It means we’ll get married.”

So from then on, I treated Carter like my future husband. I made him memorize the Boyfriend Code and controlled every move he made.

Carter always went along with it, but he never said yes when I actually confessed.

“If we get together for real, I’ll end up totally whipped.”

When we were eighteen, he poked my forehead, laughing too hard to stop.

“Bossy. Ask me again when I’m twenty-five. I’m not done having fun yet.”

I waited and waited, thinking once he turned twenty-five, we’d be forever.

Instead, after just one year of college, he got more and more annoyed with me.

I sighed. It didn’t hurt the way I thought it would—just felt like a waste.

If I’d known those numbers could change, I never would’ve been so strict with him. I exhausted myself for years.

The sky was gray. The rain wasn’t heavy—just suffocating.

I hate days like this. I sped up, then froze when I spotted a guy’s back in the distance.

He was wearing all black, tall and lean. Even from behind, I could tell he was stupidly hot.

But what hooked me was the number above his head.

26,290.

That long number that had been dancing over Carter just yesterday was now flickering above this stranger.

My feet moved on their own. The closer I got, the louder my steps splashed, and the harder my heart pounded.

By the time I was right behind him, I opened my mouth and completely blanked.

Hey, gorgeous. Are you my future husband?

Hi. Do I look like your future wife?

So, we’re gonna end up together—want to hear about it?

All of it sounded like I’d escaped a psych ward.

Frustrated, I tailed him like a total creep, eyes glued to the number above his head.

Then he stopped and slowly turned around.

My eyes widened. Rain hammered my umbrella, as loud as my heartbeat pounding in my ears.

Behind that number, a caption practically wrote itself: This one’s mine.

Next to the photo Carter had just shown me, this guy was on another level.

His skin was pale with that cool undertone, making his lips look soft pink—like they’d be perfect to kiss.

Sharp brows. Beautiful amber eyes that settled on me, quiet and steady.

Even his fingers curled around the umbrella handle were long and pale, like a porcelain doll’s.

My face burned hotter and hotter. I stuttered and couldn’t get a single word out.

“Can I help you?”
