The timestamp on the video read 10:00 PM the previous night. The footage clearly showed me walking into the living room, opening a drawer, and swallowing two white pills before heading back to my bedroom.

The person filming then walked over to the drawer and zoomed in on the labeled medication box—heavy-duty prescription liver-detox pills used for rapidly lowering enzyme counts before a medical physical.

I stared at the screen, my mind completely blank.

How was this possible? I knew for a fact that I hadn’t touched those pills, yet the footage looked completely real.

Bennett squeezed my hand tightly, stepping forward defensively.

“The video is a fake. I was with Valerie the entire night,” he declared firmly. “I can personally testify that she didn’t ingest anything from yesterday afternoon until we arrived here.”

Chloe let out a condescending scoff.

“You’re her boyfriend, of course you’re going to lie for her,” she said, handing the device over. “Director Jenkins, please have your tech team verify the file. See for yourself if it’s altered.”

Five minutes later, the technical supervisor returned. The video was authentic; there were no digital alterations or edit marks found.

Jenkins looked back at me, his expression hardening into cold disapproval.

“Ms. Sterling, to maintain the absolute integrity of the Civil Service selection process, you are required to submit to an immediate secondary screening.”

I dug my fingernails into my palms, forcing my brain to work at hyper-speed.

“Director, I will cooperate with the secondary screen,” I said, keeping my voice level. “But I request a three-day window. I just drank a massive amount of water, and it could severely alter my immediate baseline metrics.”

Chloe cut me off with a sharp laugh.

“Are you serious? Since when does drinking water mess up a drug test? You’re just trying to buy time,” she jeered.

“If we wait three days, whatever chemicals are in your system will have completely metabolized out of your body! I demand the test happen right now.”

Chloe’s argument struck a chord with the anxious crowd, and the room erupted into murmurs of agreement.

“She’s right, water won’t change a drug panel. Test her now!”

“Look at her shaking. She’s terrified because she got caught.”

“Either test her this second or disqualify her completely. If the department tries to sweep this under the rug, we’ll take it straight to the state oversight committee!”

The evaluation panel members huddled together, whispering urgently as they looked between Chloe and me.

After a tense discussion, Jenkins stepped forward to deliver their verdict.

The lobby fell into a dead hush as every eye burned into me.

Chloe threw her head back slightly, looking at me like a queen admiring a defeated subject.

I closed my eyes, running through every possible scenario, but there was no way out of the building without looking guilty.

Opening my eyes, I looked Jenkins in the face. “I consent to the immediate screening.”
