I Rented My Husband Out and Bought My Daughter A Heart Surgery Chapter 08

I turned sharply, only then realizing Bria had gotten out of the ‘car.

She clutched the edge of my sleeve, her face open and confused.

All the color drained from Alistair’s face.

“Bria… what did you just say?”

“I’m your father. Are you still upset with me? Is that why you’re saying this?”

“Bria, I was wrong. Can you forgive me?”

She took a small step back.

“Mister, my dad already died.”

“He came to see me during surgery. In my dream.”

“He told me everything would be okay.”

She blinked at him, puzzled.

“So how could you be my dad?”

I stepped forward, blocking her.

“You heard her. Leave.”

“Stop showing up and upsetting my daughter.”

Alistair’s eyes reddened. His lips moved, but no words came out.

Before I could call the police, he turned and walked away. Unsteady. Hollow.

But he didn’t stop.

I took time off work.

Every day, I drove Bria to school and picked her up myself.

I didn’t let her out of my sight.

Not even for a second.

One night, while I was blow-drying her hair, she spoke up suddenly.

“Mom… why does Dexter’s dad keep showing up near my school?”

“Did he stop wanting Dexter?”

Every nerve in my body tightened.

“He didn’t come near you, did he?”

“Did he say anything strange?”

She shook her head.

“The teachers know he’s not my dad. They make him leave every time.”

She paused.

“But today, he left something at the gate before he went.”

“A doll. One with blinking eyes and curly hair.”

My chest tightened.

I knew exactly which one.

“Did you bring it home?”

That doll…

She had refused to sell it before, even when she needed the money.

And in the end, it had been broken.

She shook her head again.

“Why would I?”

“I’m not a little kid anymore. I don’t even like dolls now.”

She frowned slightly.

“I just don’t get it. Why is Dexter’s dad trying to be nice to me?”

“Did he stop wanting Dexter too?”

I turned off the hairdryer.

“If he brought you something you really liked… would you want to get close to him?”

She pouted immediately and leaned into me.

“Mom, why would you ask that?”

“Do I look that easy to bribe?”

“That’s not my dad. I don’t want anything from him.”

I let out a quiet breath.

For the first time, I felt the tension ease.

After that, Bria said she never saw him again.

The school must have called the police.

He was deported.

Banned from reentering.

Life returned to normal.

A year later, we went back for her follow-up.

Just as we arrived at the hospital, my old phone lit up.

A call from a lawyer.

They informed me that Vance Holdings had transferred twenty percent of its equity into Bria’s

name.

I ended the call.

Then the news started coming in.

I hadn’t followed anything back home for over a year. Now it all unfolded at once.

The recording I had sold had exploded across every platform.

Coraline’s name had trended for weeks.

The comments were relentless. Homewrecker. Manipulative. Disgusting.

Her address was exposed, and crowds began gathering outside her building, throwing paint across her door and dumping trash at her feet.

The scandal dragged Vance Holdings down with it, sending stock prices plunging and prompting the board to strip Alistair of most of his authority, leaving him with little more than a title.

After holding out for months, Coraline finally snapped.

She took Dexter and went straight to the Vance family estate.

She made her demand.

“Bria’s dead. That makes my son the only heir you have left.”

“Either Alistair marries me, or you pay me off.”

“Otherwise, I tell everyone everything.”

Alistair’s mother didn’t argue. She ordered a paternity test.

The results came back quickly.

Dexter wasn’t Alistair’s son.

Coraline froze.

“That’s impossible.”

“You’re the only man I’ve ever been with.”

No one answered her.

Alistair said nothing. He simply watched as his mother handed her over to the police.

Extortion charges.

As for Dexter-he was placed into the state system.

No one came for him.

Not even once.
