I Rejected My Double-Standard Alpha Chapter 02

Yet at that moment, watching them flirt and joke so easily, I forced myself to tell myself it was just platonic banter. 

When the food arrived, a plate of pineapple fried rice was set in 

front of me. 

Daphne suddenly noticed, feigning surprise. “Oh, I forgot your girlfriend is allergic to pineapple! Matteo, why didn’t you tell me earlier?” 

She offered to trade her seafood rice with me but put on a show like she was parting with something valuable. “The server said this was the last portion… Well, it’s fine. If your girlfriend wants it that badly, she can have it.” 

It felt like she was painting me as some spoiled brat— snatching something someone else wanted, and over a plate of 

plain seafood rice. 

I was about to decline, but Matteo cut me off. “Eat it. You don’t owe her anything. Who does she think she is?” 

The table went dead silent. 

Daphne tugged gently at his sleeve, frowning. “Why are you arguing with your Luna? Just let her eat. I don’t mind. The 

pineapple rice is fine.” 

Matteo didn’t back down. 

He raised his voice, making sure everyone heard. 

“Luna? Please. We haven’t even had a Mate Ceremony. I’m just dating her, that’s all.” 

One of his friends teased, “What’s that supposed to mean? 

Matteo, are you breaking up with her?” 

Matteo answered automatically. “No.” 

The friend chuckled casually. “See? You’re whipped by Faye. You have to check in just to go out for drinks. You fight over petty things. And you think you’d actually dump her?” 

Matteo’s face darkened instantly. 

“Who says I wouldn’t? I could easily—” 

He almost said it-“break up“-but stopped himself and 

looked away. 

“I’m not the type to nitpick. Faye’s just sensitive. We’ve been together this long, so I’ll give her one last chance to apologize.” 

[My wolf warned me to glance at his friends‘ expressions— fleeting disappointment that Matteo failed to notice.] 

I was stunned. 

Daphne looped her arm through his and joked, “Well, when 

you do break up with her, come find me. Don’t give anyone 

else a chance.” 

A cold smirk tugged at Matteo’s lips. He ruffled Daphne’s hair, 

and when his gaze flicked toward me, his voice turned icy. 

“Obviously. She overreacts about everything. You’ve always 

been the reasonable one.” 

Everyone left. 

And I stood alone on the side of the road. 

The restaurant was in a rough part of Frostveil Pack’s downtown area–easy to get a ride to, nearly impossible to 

hail one going back. 

Matteo refused to drive me home and made sure no one else 

would either. 

[My wolf, Lily, huffed irritably inside my head.] 

[Faye, you’re being an idiot. If you’d just sweet–talk Matteo a little, he’d ditch that ex of his and drive you home himself.] 

[He’s just being stubborn. He’s still mad about the bar thing. 

He sat there all night seeing red.] 

[Faye, I can feel how much this hurts. But why won’t you just patch things up?] 

[He’s been lingering nearby this whole time. He knows this area is sketchy and he’s scared you’ll get hurt. He still loves 

you.] 

I pulled out my phone, ready to call Matteo. 

I knew if I did, he’d come pick me up immediately. 

But my fingers hovered over the screen–and then I lowered

I lost it and burst into tears. I sank down onto the curb and 

cried. 

I didn’t even know what I’d done wrong. 

He always pulled this crap: giving me the silent treatment until I apologized. 

I used to think that was just how he was. 

But that wasn’t true. I’d watched him drop to his knees and beg Daphne more times than I could count–soft, patient, desperate. He’d never once been like that with me.
