I Raised His 99 Children to Save My Son Chapter 04

Kian let out a cold laugh. “How dare you ask me that?”

“Helena. You vicious bitch. You poisoned every child at the preschool! Hurting Camille wasn’t enough? You want to wipe out all my children? Every last one?!”

I froze. My entire body went rigid. “What are you talking about?! I never poisoned anyone!”

“Still lying!”

Kian’s rage boiled hotter. “Dare you say you didn’t go to the preschool today? Every child is in the ER with food poisoning right now. Ambulances are lined up down the block. Who else could it be?!”

I followed his glare toward the hallway. Gurney after gurney rushed past. Kids of all ages were being wheeled in on stretchers, foaming at the mouth, unconscious.

I bit down hard on my lip. “I went to pick up something my son left behind. That’s all. I did nothing!”

Kian wasn’t hearing it. “Something so important you had to get it today? What? Your boy doesn’t have much time left? Needed to see him one last time before he croaks?”

Those words shredded the last wall around my heart.

Right. My son had no time left. He was already gone.

The door creaked open. Camille stumbled in, clutching her stomach, face ghostly pale.

“Helena. I know you hate my carrying Kian’s baby. But how could you do something this evil?”

“You sent someone to deliver soup to me this afternoon. Thank God I felt too sick to drink it. If I had, my baby would be gone too…”

Before Camille finished speaking, the door burst open. Kian’s entire flock of mistresses flooded the room, shrieking at me.

“Helena, you poisonous bitch! How dare you hurt little kids?!”

“My son is barely out of diapers! How could you be so heartless!”

“Mr. Steele! This woman is a monster! You have to punish her!”

Then came the press. A swarm of reporters from The Westshire Insider shoved their way in, cameras aimed directly at my face.

“Mrs. Steele! Did you orchestrate the mass poisoning at the preschool?”

“Were you jealous? Trying to kill off the competition so your son could claim the Steele inheritance?”

“You ran that preschool yourself, how could you commit this atrocity? Aren’t you afraid of what’s coming for you?!”

The mob closed in. I couldn’t get a single word out.

Kian didn’t hesitate. His hand cracked across my face with brutal force.

“Helena. You disgust me.”

“I tell you, even if you murdered every last child, the Steele fortune would never go to your son!”

“Arrest her. Throw her in a cell. Let her rot and think about what she’s done.”

“Kian Steele! You’re blind! Completely and utterly blind! Hahahaha!”

Security dragged me away by the arms. As I disappeared down the hallway, Kian stared at the chaos around him—women weeping, children screaming. A strange, inexplicable irritation twisted in his gut.

He scowled and barked at his assistant. “Get them all out of here. Now. They’re giving me a headache.”

The crowd dispersed. Silence finally settled over the hospital room.

Kian looked at the empty bed. He turned to the nurse, voice flat. “Where’s the brat? Bring him here. I want to see him.”

“Sir. Elias passed away three months ago.”

“What did you say?!”

Kian’s whole body jolted. “Who gave you permission to stand there and curse my son?! Do you want to lose your job?!”

“Sir. It’s true. His body was cremated long ago. We have the death certificate and cremation records. Mrs. Steele handled everything three months ago.”

Kian stared at the cold, official death certificate. His hands trembled uncontrollably.

“Helena… I blamed Helena for nothing?!”

He spun around, desperate to run after me.

But before he could even take a step, his assistant raced in, pale as death, scrambling and stumbling.

“Sir! Something terrible—Mrs. Steele—she—”
