But I didn’t get an answer.

Instead, Cole’s eyes were red-and a cup came flying at me.

“What are you crying for? Because of your negligence, Grace got hurt.”

“The experiment data is gone. Everyone’s work-destroyed!”

I flinched. My ears rang.

But Cole was already gone.

“You can’t do anything right! You’re useless!”

“You can’t even do your job as an assistant! Why do you always have to be a burden?!”

“The night patrol-why didn’t you do it?!”

I tried to explain through the pain, even as other colleagues stared at me like I was the villain.

“The fire started in Lab 02 on the second floor. That’s a restricted area.”

“It wasn’t my responsibility-someone in the lab mishandled something-

But he cut me off.

“Are you blaming Grace?!”

He grabbed my collar, completely ignoring how weak I was.

“She’s your best friend! She’s hurt! Her data is gone!”

“And now you’re accusing her?! Do you even have a conscience?!”

Grace stayed quiet, head down, crying softly.

The whispers started.

“Luna’s just shifting the blame. Night safety checks were her job.”

“I’m not blaming anyone,” I said, my voice steady.

“Cole, you’ll see the evidence. The investigation will release a full report.”

I turned to the nurse. “I’d like these people to leave my room.”

I used the last of my strength to say it.

And in that moment, something inside me stopped hurting.

The years of memories, the three of us-it all burned away with that fire.

Seven days later, I was discharged.

The apartment was even more of a mess than before.

I packed quickly and left for New York.

Right after I settled in, I got a message on WhatsApp from the fire department.

A partial report. Some footage.

I opened it.

My breath caught.

Grace and Cole-they’d be saying goodbye to the institute soon.

The fire department sent their findings to the lab.

The evidence pointed directly to Grace’s lab. Nothing to do with my area.

But no matter how they questioned her, Grace just shook her head and cried.

“Someone’s lying. Luna’s covering something up. The fire must have started in her area and spread

to mine.”

“I don’t believe it either,” Cole said, frowning at the report.

“Grace is always careful. Maybe there was a mistake.”

Other colleagues chimed in.

“Foster’s a genius. He wouldn’t make that kind of error.”

“Maybe the report’s wrong.”

“Honestly, I think Luna did it. She couldn’t have Cole, so she went after Bennett’s lab.”

“Good thing she quit. Otherwise she’d still be a liability.”

The fire investigator looked uncomfortable. Finally, the lead investigator spoke up.

“Some footage was damaged in the fire. But we’re restoring the cloud data.”

“It’ll take three days.”
