They were always on the honor roll together.

Always standing side by side at presentations.

They got into the same university, the same program.

I closed my eyes and forced myself to stop looking.

Grace and Cole said they’d come home early to take care of me.

They didn’t come back all night.

The next day, I handed in my resignation and showed up at the institute one last time. Something felt off.

“She’s not even that pretty. And she thinks she can steal someone’s man?”

“She’s got nerve. I saw her get into Bennett’s car yesterday.”

“Yeah, but she got kicked out halfway—so embarrassing.”

I checked WhatsApp.

Someone had posted a video of me bringing Cole lunch.

His face was cold, his attention on Grace.

I was about to clear things up and tell the truth when Cole beat me to it.

“Luna is just a roommate—and Grace’s best friend.”

“Everyone thinks Grace and I are a thing. If I say otherwise, she gets dragged through the mud.”

“Let’s keep our distance for now.”

“When we have the wedding, we can invite everyone—then they’ll know the truth.”

So he did understand how rumors worked.

He just never cared when they were about me.

It didn’t matter.

There was never going to be a second wedding.

My last shift at the institute was overnight.

Near the end, the fire alarm went off.

Smoke started pouring in.
