No wonder they hated each other and started fighting the second they met.

Breck glared down at his plate and hacked the steak into pieces.

“This time, even if I have to be shameless, I’m staying by your side.”

“What if one day you look at me and suddenly realize I’m adorable?”

“My dad and my sister run the family business anyway. I have plenty of free time.”

I choked. There really was no reasoning with a trust-fund heir.

When I didn’t answer, Breck immediately grew alert.

“Why aren’t you saying anything? Don’t tell me you still have feelings for Dash.”

He sounded panicked.

“He dated you online for six months, then turned around and got with another woman he’d met

once.”

“A guy like that doesn’t deserve you.” I smiled and shook my head.

“You’re overthinking. I have no interest in someone else’s boyfriend.”

Breck let out a relieved breath and lifted his chin smugly.

“You hear that? Maris said she doesn’t like you.”

I followed his gaze and turned around.

Then I calmly greeted the man standing behind us.

“What a coincidence. You and Elodie came here for dinner too?”

“Elodie and I broke up.”

“Oh.”

I set down my silverware.

“I’m full. I’ll leave first.”

Maybe he thought I hadn’t heard him, because he repeated it.

“I’m not someone else’s boyfriend anymore.”

This time, I finally looked up. “And?”

“What does that have to do with me?”

“We’re already over, aren’t we?”

“No. We didn’t even have enough to call it a breakup.”

“At most, we were an online relationship that failed in person.”

The ridiculous thing was, when I confessed the truth to him back then, I had still secretly hoped six/

months of closeness meant something to him.

Maybe there had still been a chance for us.

But he had turned around and chosen Elodie.

A thousand apologies could never hurt as much as one real choice.

“If you really liked me, you wouldn’t have done that.”

Dash’s explanation was as pale as his face.

“I was obsessed with her back then. I didn’t actually like her.”

“When I took her out to dinner, I thought of how you hate spicy food. When I went shopping with

her, I thought of your face.”

I said, “And now you’re obsessed with me.”

“You just can’t stand the thought that Breck Calder, a spoiled trust-fund brat who does nothing but

party, might take what you threw away.”

The smug curve of Breck’s mouth vanished the second he heard “spoiled trust-fund brat.”

I stood.

“Please move. You’re blocking my way.’

Dash reached out and stopped me, refusing to let me leave.

“Dashiell Kincaid, do you remember promising you’d do one thing for me?”

“I have something for you to do now.”

He nodded quickly. “Stop disturbing my life.”

“I’ve always been stubborn. I don’t go back to men I’ve already left.”

On the drive home, Breck was silent the whole way.

When we reached my building, he suddenly said, “I know why you won’t accept me. It’s because I’m a useless rich kid.”

I shook my head. “Why would you think that?”

Honestly, if I had been born into the Calder family, I probably would have been lazier than he was. Breck looked devastated but determined.

“You don’t have to comfort me out of pity.”

“Starting tomorrow, I’m becoming an ambitious man.”
