“Asher is an extremely cunning and ruthless rival,” Veronica said. “Staying here will only put you in danger.”

She reached out, took the iPad from my hand, and set it aside on the couch.

“Jarvis, escort Willow back to her room,” Veronica ordered.

Jarvis walked over and bowed respectfully. “This way, Mrs. Kensington.”

I looked at Veronica’s stern expression and found the whole situation faintly amusing.

Even amid her distress, she still sought to shield me, worried someone like me who simply cherished fine things might be drawn into their high-stakes conflict.

I stood up and smoothed the hem of my silk robe. “Fine by me,” I said flatly.

I turned and walked toward the spiral staircase, my high heels clicking crisply across the floor.

Reaching the second-floor landing, I paused and peeked down through the banister gaps.

The grand front doors swung open slowly.
