Gideon tried to speak. Nothing came out.

[Wait… has the ML actually fallen for her??]

[No way, no way. He just hasn’t wrapped his head around the truth yet.)

Gideon let go.

His voice dropped.

“Give me time.”

I shook my head.

“I gave you three years. That’s enough.”

I turned around and walked back.

Gideon stayed where he was, at the edge of the property.

His wolf ears flattened back in defeat.

He watched me walk away and didn’t move.

When I got back to the house, Julian was still there.

He set his fork down and looked at me.

“Finished?”

“Yeah.”

“He didn’t agree to the divorce?”

I blinked. “How did you know?”

Julian gave a faint smile.

“I’ve seen that look before. My dad used to look at my mom the same way.”

I sat down. My appetite was gone.

“Your mom… she was human?”

Julian nodded.

“Yeah. She and my dad were fated, but the family wouldn’t allow it. He married Gideon’s mom instead. My mom got sick not long after that and didn’t survive it.”

“Gideon’s mom…?”

“An arranged mating. Like the rest of them.”

Julian’s voice was matter-of-fact.

“That’s how it works with shifter nobility. Pack politics, bloodline, family interests. People come

last.”

[So the second ML is a hybrid.]

[His mom’s story is so sad.]

[So that’s why he doesn’t get married?]

I was quiet for a while.

“I won’t end up like your mom.”

Julian looked at me. “You’re smarter than she was.”

“It’s not about being smart.”

I stared down at my plate.

“I just stopped loving him. Once you stop, nothing can touch you.”

Julian didn’t say anything to that.

The next day, I went to the property as usual.

The new livestock had arrived.

A hundred young lambs, all bleating and restless.

I crouched by the pens, checking each one.

[She’s actually raising livestock??]

[Did she forget she’s about to get thrown out any day now?]

I muttered to myself. “Once they’re grown, each one sells for over three hundred bucks. A hundred lambs. That’s thirty grand.”

[…She’s calculating livestock profits now??]

That afternoon, a black SUV pulled up at the edge of the property.

Gideon got out.

He was carrying two large bags.

I glanced up at him and kept working.

Gideon came closer and set the bags down.

“I brought food.”

“I’m fine.”

He didn’t leave.

He stood nearby, saying nothing for a long time.

“The thing with Chloe. I’ll deal with it.”

I finally looked up.

“Deal with it how? She’s the daughter of the man who died saving your life. You owe her family a

life debt.”

Gideon’s fists clenched.

“…I’ll deal with it.”

I stood up, brushing off my hands.

“Gideon, you don’t need to deal with anything. Just sign the papers.”

I turned and walked away.

Gideon didn’t follow.

The food in the bags was still warm.

On the third day, he showed up again.

This time, he brought seeds.

I took them without a word.

On the fourth day, he showed up in work clothes.

He walked into the property.

i watched him tug at the soil with no idea what he was doing.

I couldn’t take it.

“That’s not a weed. That’s the crop.”

Gideon froze.

[HAHAHA, the ML just ripped out an actual crop thinking it was a weed.]

[A Pack commander doing farm work. Now I’ve seen everything.]

I sighed and crouched down next to him.

“This one’s the crop, this one’s a weed. See how the leaves are different?”

Gideon listened like his life depended on it.

His wolf ears pricked forward.

I looked up and realized he wasn’t watching the plants at all. He was watching me.

“Look at the leaves, not at me.”

“Can’t help it.”

My heart stuttered.

I dropped my gaze fast.

“You’re ridiculous.”

[No no no, the way the ML is looking at her is TOO soft.]
