I Made a Bracelet for the Man Who Didn’t Love Me, and He Wore It for Two Years Chapter 05

In the end,

I asked Grant for forty thousand dollars.

He didn’t ask what I needed it for.

He agreed without hesitation.

He asked for my banking details and transferred the money on the spot.

After it went through,

he said my name out of nowhere.

“Claire.”

“Yeah?”

He looked at me through the rearview mirror. “Have you dated anyone these past two years…’

I waited quietly.

But in the end, he didn’t finish the question.

“We’re here.”

I didn’t linger. I got out of the car.

When I got home, Vivian was washing dishes.

I helped her clear the table.

Halfway through, Vivian’s phone buzzed on the table.

I glanced over without thinking.

A message from Grant flashed across the screen.

[Ever thought about moving? This place is too far out. I’ll get you somewhere better.]

Of course.

Someone like Grant Whitmore was hardly going to be thrilled about his girlfriend continuing to

share an apartment.

And maybe he simply didn’t want to risk seeing me again.

I pretended I hadn’t noticed and looked away.

When Vivian finished, she came over and wrapped me in a hug.

“Claire, you’re amazing! He loved the food. But you have to keep this between us, okay?”

I nodded and promised.

That night, once I was in bed, I pulled out a slip of paper.

Grant had given it to me earlier.

Cole Harrington’s Instagram handle was on it.

“Here’s his contact. Reach out whenever you want to see him.”

I stared at it for a moment, then searched the handle and sent a follow request.

A few minutes later,

It was declined.

I thought for a moment, then tried again.

This time, there was no response at all.

I waited.

At some point, I fell asleep.

Early the next morning, I went to the hospital.

I paid my grandmother’s surgery bill.

It was already evening by the time I left.

When I got home, the front door was wide open.

People were carrying boxes out.

Vivian was nowhere in sight.

I texted her. [Are you home? Are you moving out?]

[Still at work! Did you see my boyfriend? He’s helping me move.]

My finger froze above the screen.

Just then, a box in the stack beside me shifted.

It tipped toward me.

I didn’t have time to move.

A hand caught my wrist and pulled me out of the way.

The voice that followed sounded tired.

“It’s a mess out here. Wait inside.”
