I Lost My Baby, He Became Her Hero Chapter 03

Adrian stepped in front of Vanessa and shielded her completely.

“Natalie! If you have a problem, take it out on me. Don’t touch Vanessa or the baby.”

His grip left my wrist throbbing.

I stood there without a word.

Vanessa tugged at his sleeve and softened her voice. “Adrian, don’t… Natalie didn’t mean it. We’re the ones who hurt her. I understand why she resents us.”

His anger hadn’t faded.

He started to speak again, then stopped when he saw my pale face.

“Why are you sweating so much?”

Adrian frowned and stepped closer. “If you feel sick, stay in the hospital. Why come here and cause more trouble?”

He reached for my arm.

Millie’s sharp cry sounded behind him.

Adrian turned at once and took the baby. “It’s okay, sweetheart. Mommy and Daddy will get you some milk.”

I watched his back as my knees weakened.

Just then, Jack caught my elbow, looking visibly uncomfortable.

“Mr. Cole asked me to take you away from here.”

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed with a $150,000 bank transfer notification.

Then Adrian called.

His voice stayed low beneath the noise behind him.

“You received the money, right? With the $1.5 million in the divorce settlement, that makes $1.65 million.”

“Take it and leave the country.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

After a brief silence, he continued, “Vanessa won’t be comfortable if you stay. I don’t want her upset.”

From the doorway, I watched him hold his daughter with one arm.

With the other, he carefully guided a bottle to her mouth.

Vanessa supported the baby’s neck and smiled up at him.

Bathed in warm light, the three of them looked like a perfect family portrait.

A laugh escaped me.

“You’re paying $1.65 million to make me disappear. What will you pay for my daughter’s life?”

“Natalie…”

His voice hardened.

“That was an accident. The divorce is final, and you’ll get every dollar you’re owed. What else do you want from me?”

I watched him in silence as my eyes burned.

When I met Adrian, he wasn’t the powerful CEO everyone knew.

He had nothing.

He lived in a cramped, hundred-square-foot basement room in a rundown neighborhood.

I ate instant noodles with him, stayed up through endless nights, and helped him scrape together every dollar of startup capital.

When drinking at business dinners left him with a bleeding ulcer, I stayed beside his hospital bed night after night, afraid to close my eyes.

I gave him the best ten years of my life.

In the end, he treated those years like a transaction he could settle with a check.

I said nothing else and simply turned and walked to the door.

We’d been driving less than ten minutes when Jack’s phone buzzed.

“Ms. Bennett… something happened.”

He handed me the phone.

A topic featuring a video of my conversation with Vanessa was trending across social media.

The comment section had exploded, with thousands accusing Vanessa of being the mistress who stole the wife’s place.

Each insult was worse than the last.

Before I reached the bottom, Jack slammed on the brakes.

“Ms. Bennett, Mr. Cole’s car is blocking the road ahead.”
