I Lost My Baby, He Became Her Hero Chapter 01

I Lost My Baby, He Became Her Hero Chapter 01

I had just walked out of the county courthouse with my finalized divorce decree.

Someone tagged my ex-husband, Adrian Cole, in our college alumni group chat.

[Congratulations, Adrian! You’re a dad!]

Before I could even process the message, my friend Vanessa Moore’s profile picture popped up.

[Thank you, guys. It’s a girl.]

I stared at the message, my mind blank.

Her pinned Instagram post showed her leaning against Adrian with a freshly issued marriage certificate in hand, her eyes crinkled with happiness.

The caption read: [After seven long years, we finally made it.]

Adrian had commented below it: [No matter how long I had to wait, this day was worth it.]

Mutual friends flooded the comments with congratulations, and as I scrolled through them one by one, I saw my mother’s profile picture.

[My sweet goddaughter, I’m so happy for you.]

My fingers began to shake around my phone.

Adrian and I had been married for ten years, yet he’d spent seven of them with Vanessa while my mother and all our friends helped hide the affair from me.

I sank onto the courthouse steps and zoomed in on the marriage certificate, zoomed out, then zoomed in again.

My chest felt so tight I could barely breathe.

I reopened the post and left a comment.

[Congrats. Seven years of your love story, paid for with ten years of mine.]

Adrian called almost immediately.

For the past six months, Adrian had blocked me everywhere, forcing even the simplest message to go through his assistant, Jack. Yet now he was calling me himself.

“Natalie Bennett, delete that comment.”

“Why?” My voice trembled as I gripped the phone. “Was I wrong? You and Vanessa lied to me for seven years.”

Silence held for a second.

“We’re divorced now. What’s the point in dragging up the past?”

My heart clenched.

Did our ten-year marriage mean nothing to him?

“I’ll add another $150,000 to your divorce settlement.”

His voice softened. “Natalie, I’m begging you. Please. Vanessa just gave birth. She’s emotionally fragile right now. That comment will upset her.”

Each word cut into me like a dull blade.

Adrian had always been proud.

Back in college, a group of men beat him so badly that he lost part of his pinky, yet he still refused to beg.

Later, more than a dozen competitors joined forces to blacklist his company, but he still refused to back down.

In ten years of marriage, we’d fought countless times, but he’d never once backed down to me. Now he was begging, all over one comment.

When the tears fell, I suddenly felt like a fool.

I opened my mouth, but Vanessa’s voice came through the phone.

“Adrian, come here. Millie’s crying again.”

Millie.

He had given their daughter the name Millie.

Five years into our marriage, I’d finally gotten pregnant.

I told Adrian I’d dreamed we were having a girl who looked like me.

He’d smiled and rested his hand on my stomach. “If it’s a girl, let’s call her Millie, so her happiness will never end.”

But our daughter never got that blessing.

When I was close to full term, one of Adrian’s business rivals sent men to our home.

I fell down the stairs during the struggle.

I lost the baby and underwent an emergency hysterectomy.

Now he’d given my daughter’s name to someone else’s child.

By the time I came back to myself, the call had ended.

The sun blazed overhead, bright enough to make me dizzy.

Newlyweds laughed behind me, wrapped in each other’s arms.

Ten years earlier, Adrian and I had stood outside the same courthouse after our civil ceremony.

He’d lifted me off the ground and spun me around. “Natalie, I’ll never let go of your hand.”

Only a few years later, that promise had turned to ash.

My phone kept buzzing.

Our mutual friends flooded the post with new comments, trying to bury mine before Vanessa saw it.

I returned to her Instagram feed and kept scrolling.

There were dozens of posts I’d never seen, including one dated June 13, 2019, that showed Vanessa sitting on Adrian’s desk.

The caption read: [New job. Apparently, I’m the boss’s boss now.]

Mutual friends had commented below it.

[Looks like the future Mrs. Cole has arrived.]

At the start of that month, both families, Adrian, and our friends had pressured me to leave Cole Holdings.

I’d resigned and stayed home to care for our family.

Their seven-year affair had started then.

On December 9, 2021, Vanessa posted a photo of an IV line taped to her hand.

Her caption read: [I cut myself by accident. Someone stayed all night. Better than any painkiller. Thanks, my hero.]

I would never forget that date. Adrian’s rivals had come for revenge, and as I shielded my stomach and tried to escape upstairs, I fell during the struggle.

I lay in a pool of blood, calling Adrian again and again, but he never answered.

That day, I lost my daughter.

Adrian had spent it playing hero for another woman.

Then came a post from six months ago.

Vanessa had uploaded a clear prenatal ultrasound image.

[Baby, Mommy and Daddy have waited so long for you.]

That same morning, I’d tied Adrian’s necktie like I always did.

Without warning, he spoke, “Natalie, I want a divorce.”

My ears rang.

“Why?”

He didn’t look at me.

“I’m tired.”

After that day, he stopped coming home.

He offered no explanation and refused to talk, blocking my calls and leaving every message unanswered.

Only Jack contacted me about the divorce.

Unable to reach Adrian, I began to unravel and even turned to Vanessa for comfort.

She’d reassured me.

“Don’t overthink it. You know Adrian. He’ll come around when work settles down. The more you push, the more he’ll pull away.”

I believed I’d driven him away.

I replayed every conversation we’d ever had and searched our messages, my Instagram history, and every old photo, desperate to identify the day, sentence, or mistake that had made him tired of me.

For months, I barely functioned, hiding at home and crying night after night until I was emotionally shattered and completely drained.

After another midnight collapse, I was rushed to the ICU.

Adrian still didn’t come.

When I woke, I took the marital settlement agreement from Jack and signed my name.

Now, as I scrolled through Vanessa’s posts, I finally understood.

While I’d been falling apart in agony, Adrian had been with Vanessa the entire time.
