It took Miles half a year to recover enough to return to work.

A moment later, he followed his gut and pried her off him.

He stood up and met Serena’s wounded eyes.

This time, he did not soften.

“Serena, we should go back to keeping our distance like we used to,” he said. “We’re not right for each

other.”

Serena was stunned by the sudden words.

Her eyes reddened, and she rushed forward again, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist, refusing to

let go.

“Why?” she asked. “Did I do something wrong? Did I upset you?”

“Miles, Elena is gone now. Why still can’t we be together?”

This time, Miles did not push her away.

He only looked past her with an unreadable expression, through the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office,

toward somewhere far away.

“I don’t know.”

His voice was low. “The person I thought I wanted is standing right in front of me, but my heart feels

empty.”

Miles took Serena’s hand from his waist and pressed it against his chest.

“Serena, it hurts here,” he said. “Every night, it hurts.”
