I Haunted His Dreams After He Dumped Me For My Roommate Chapter 12

Back in that small-town high school, I fought tooth and nail for every AI could get.

Our guidance counselor said most kids from my school ended up at community college-if they went anywhere at all.

Later, I made it to Boston.

Vera said she’d completely bombed her exams to end up at the same college as me. “I barely even tried my whole years of high school.”

In that moment, the helplessness of never being able to shake her made me doubt everything. What was the point of all my effort?

Just to land at some no-name state school in Boston no one had heard of?

Later, when I dated Ethan, I started to fantasize-maybe, for once, I could be saved by being loved.

Just find a boyfriend more impressive than Vera’s. Find a boyfriend Vera would envy. Then I could

escape this prison where I could never win against her.

But Ethan still ended up drawn to her.

No matter how much I liked him, he still picked the prettier girl. Every single time.

Exactly like my mom. Every time she took me grocery shopping and my hands turned red from carrying all the bags, people would say I was such a good kid. My mom would always add, “I’ve got

another daughter too. She’s gorgeous.”

Vera forever held that sense of superiority over me. And I forever felt that survival anxiety in her

presence.

That playbook was never going to beat her.

During those years studying abroad, juggling school and part-time jobs, I finally found a field I genuinely loved. But life stayed ordinary, long, and tedious.

Many years later, when I heard updates about her from classmates, I learned she’d gotten married

and had kids.

Staring at her photos, all that adolescent anxiety and unease felt so distant-like a homework sheet I’d forgotten to do, due the next day, back in middle school. Something that once felt like the end of the world, and now I could barely remember why.

I suddenly realized I didn’t care who won or lost anymore.

Through all these summers in France, I let myself grow wild.
