I Haunted His Dreams After He Dumped Me For My Roommate Chapter 04

He didn’t call me back.

Someone upstairs shouted for him.

He gave a flat response and strolled up.

Back in the dorm, Vera was talking about her progress with Ethan.

She grabbed my arm. “Was he this cold when you two were together? He doesn’t seem to text you back much, right?”

Her face was all dreamy, fake-annoyed. “He keeps wanting to call me. Says he can’t stand the thought of not seeing me all summer. Said he’d take me to his family’s place abroad.”

Another roommate said enviously, “So that’s the difference when a guy actually likes you.”

She caught herself, looked at me, flustered.

She shuffled over to my desk and whispered an apology. “But it’s true. Girls like us don’t get to dream that big. Yvie, you’re never gonna get over him. From now on, every guy you meet is gonna be a step down—and it’s gonna eat you alive.”

I put on my headphones and started my research paper.

I worked until lights-out, washed up, and climbed into bed.

Once I fell asleep, I entered Ethan’s dream.

A dark room. Rain outside the windows.

His hand pressed against my waist without warning.

He asked, “Why do you act clueless every time I bring up my dreams during the day?”

So he’d already told Vera about them.

I turned my face away, ice-cold.

But he gripped my jaw, bent down, and kissed me—over and over, like an addict hitting a vein.

“Hiding from me again. Why won’t you look at me? Did I do something wrong?”

Just that day, Ethan wouldn’t spare me an extra glance. He’d actually told me to move on. Like I was a stain he wanted to scrub off. So yeah—revenge hit me hard, and I stopped playing it safe.

I brushed the faintest kiss against the corner of his lips.

In all these dreams, I’d never once kissed him first.

His bangs hung slightly over his forehead. He froze for a long moment.

Then he looked at me—really looked at me—like he was trying to burn me into his memory.

Instinctively, I shrank back from that overwhelming gaze.

He watched me retreat.

I kept backing up until my head hit the headboard, nowhere left to go.

Only then did he give me this slow, lazy smile.

I tried to slip off the bed, but he caught my ankle lightly.

The next second, he yanked me back hard.

Outside the windows, the night rain poured.

By the time I felt like I might drown in his breathing, he turned back into that gentle, polished version of himself.

“Baby. I don’t want anyone but you.”

Watching him nearly lose it just because I pulled back a little—the twisted satisfaction made my heart slam.

Really? No one but me?

What would happen if he found out the girl in his dreams wasn’t Vera?

Would he remember how he was crawling back to me like a lost puppy right now?

He asked, “You like me a lot too, don’t you?”

I nodded, playing along in his arms.

But with every breath, only one thought pulsed through me.

I’d had my fun. Time to throw him away.

Be a stray, Ethan Chase.

The next morning, the System notified me: last night was my final chance to enter his dreams. He’d never dream of me again.

The System asked me to choose a moment—a moment Ethan would discover the girl in his dreams was me.

I looked across the room at Vera’s desk. That signed book sat there.

Last night she’d sent me a message—just a screenshot of their chat.

Ethan asked what she liked. She told him that book.

She always did this. Never said a word, just tossed a screenshot at me, waiting for me to overthink myself sick and ask for details.

But this time I didn’t ask anything.

She couldn’t take it and sent another text.

[Back when you FaceTimed him from the dorm, I kept thinking—what if he FaceTimed me instead?]

[Can’t believe it happened this easily.]

[Honestly, I don’t even like that book. But I know you do.]

I stared at her messages, then swiped my thumb across the screen and blocked Vera.

I told the System, “Pick the moment he gets together with her.”
