Even so, I went to the county courthouse the next morning.

Some part of me still wanted to see whether Ethan would come.

At nine fifteen, I saw his car pull up across the street.

When the door opened, the tension in my chest eased. I even reached up without thinking and fixed my hair.

All he had to do was say, “Leah, I’m here.”

Maybe I could have swallowed the hurt from the night before one more time.

Then his phone rang.

Ethan answered it.

I had no idea what Sienna said, but his expression changed.

A second later, he turned around and got back into the car.

The door clicked shut softly, but the sound landed like a blow to my chest.

Ten minutes later, Sienna posted on Instagram.

[I told him I didn’t want to be alone, and he really came back.]

In the photo, Ethan was holding the hand with the IV line in it.

Noah arrived at the courthouse at nine forty.

He looked exhausted as he climbed out of the car, as though he hadn’t slept.

“Stop waiting. Ethan isn’t coming today.”

I looked at him.

“I saw him.”

Noah froze.

He opened his mouth, but in the end, all he said was, “Sienna’s reaction flared up again last night. She can’t handle any stress right now.”

“And I can?”

He frowned.

“Leah, stop asking questions like that.”

He stepped closer, his voice turning soothing.

“You have the wedding and the commitment. You’ll be Mrs. Caldwell.”

“What does Sienna have? Just a few friends like us.”

I put my documents away and turned to leave.

Noah caught my arm.

“Where are you going?”

“The wedding planner’s office.”

Relief crossed his face.

“To confirm the final details?”

“Yes.”

His expression softened.

“That’s more like it. Don’t ruin the day. You’ll only make yourself look bad.”

At the wedding planner’s office, the planner looked uncomfortable.

She slid the mockups for the welcome display across the table.

On the screen, Ethan stood in the middle, with Sienna and me on either side of him.

The photo had been taken at Sienna’s birthday party the year before.

She was dressed in white, her arm looped through Ethan’s, and she looked more like the bride than I did.

I stood off to the side, still holding the knife I had used to cut her birthday cake.

Even the welcome message had been changed.

[Thank you for celebrating ten years with us.]

But why did our ten years include Sienna?

I continued scrolling through the plans.

Everything had been changed.

They had even added a section to our wedding vows thanking Sienna.

I looked at the planner.

“Who approved this?”

She answered cautiously.

“Mr. Caldwell.”

Noah saw the look on my face and immediately spoke up.

“It’s only the welcome display, not the ceremony itself. Sienna never really had a family. She just wants to feel included.”

I turned to him.

“Why does she need to feel included in my wedding?”

Noah’s voice hardened.

“Leah, don’t be so cruel.”

Just then, Ethan called.

The moment I answered, he asked, “Have you seen the plans?”

“Yes.”

“Sienna cried all night and said she felt like an outsider. I had them add a few photos.”

“Do you actually think this is appropriate?”

“What’s inappropriate about it?”

His voice was impatient.

“She’s your bridesmaid and our friend. You’re marrying me tomorrow, not a slideshow.”

I kept scrolling.

My finger froze when I reached the jewelry styling page.

A note read:

[Ms. Hart will model the pearl earrings for the pre-wedding video shoot.]

My mother had left those pearl earrings to me.

Before she died, she told me she hoped I would wear them on my wedding day.

“Why is Sienna wearing my mother’s earrings?”

Ethan was silent for a moment.

“She was only trying them on—”

I cut him off.

“My mother left those to me.”

“I know.”

I laughed in disbelief.

“You know, and you still let her wear them?”

Sienna began crying softly on the other end of the call.

“Ethan, forget it. I won’t wear them. Leah probably thinks I’m bad luck.”

Ethan’s voice immediately softened.

“Don’t say that.”

When he spoke to me again, his tone turned cold.

“Leah, Sienna was only helping with the test shoot. Do you have to make this sound so ugly?”

“Bring them back.”

Ethan didn’t answer.

Noah suddenly spoke beside me.

“Leah, if your mom were here, she wouldn’t hold this against Sienna.”

I whipped around to look at him.

The conference room went silent.

Noah flinched under my stare, but he kept going.

“Am I wrong? Your mom would want you to be the bigger person. She wouldn’t be happy to see you making this much of a pair of earrings.”

I slapped him.

Ethan’s voice turned icy over the phone.

“Leah, did you just hit him?”

Noah’s head snapped to the side, his eyes filled with disbelief.

“Leah, you’ve become someone I don’t even recognize.”

I ignored him, grabbed my bag, and headed for the door.

Ethan’s voice came through the phone.

“If you walk out now, don’t expect me home tonight.”

I paused.

“Whatever.”
