After the game, I followed the crowd outside.

Ethan texted me to wait near the campus pond and said he would pick me up for dinner.

Most students had already headed to the dining hall, so the area around the pond was nearly empty.

I was about to ask Ethan how long he would be when a sharp voice came from behind me.

“Hey. Are you waiting for Lucas?”

I turned around.

Two women in long dresses stood there, probably a year or two older than me.

One of them was stunning, but the look she gave me was anything but friendly.

I stared at them, confused.

“Who are you?”

“This is Rachel,” the other woman said with a sneer. “Everyone on campus knows her.”

Then she looked me over.

“You don’t go here, do you?”

I didn’t recognize either of them, but the mention of Lucas immediately put me on guard.

“No, I don’t. What do you want?”

The light from the setting sun caught Rachel’s face, casting shadows beneath her long lashes.

She gave me a slow once-over.

For a second, reluctant surprise flickered in her eyes.

“You’ve got some nerve,” she said, crossing her arms.

“Lucas never has women around him. How does some outsider even know him?”

The jealousy in her voice was impossible to miss.

I understood immediately.

Rachel was another one of Lucas’s admirers.

She must have seen me enter the gym with him and decided to confront me.

Unfortunately for her, I had never been a pushover.

“I don’t owe you an explanation for how I know him,” I said.

“If you like Lucas, ask him out yourself. Coming after me won’t-”

Before I could finish, Rachel lunged forward and shoved me.

My knee slammed into a rock.

Pain shot up my leg, and a red stain quickly spread across the knee of my jeans.

For one second, the air went still.

Rachel stared at me, her face going pale.

She clearly had not expected me to get hurt.

“Don’t play the victim,” she said, forcing her voice to stay steady.

“I barely touched you. You’re making it look worse so everyone blames me.”

The other woman tugged nervously at her sleeve.

“Rachel, she’s actually bleeding. If someone sees this and tells Lucas…”

“Shut up.”

Rachel cut her off, clearly panicking.

She glanced around, saw that no one else was nearby, and exhaled in relief.

Before leaving, she threw one last comment over her shoulder.

“You fell. Don’t blame me.”

What was wrong with this woman?

I was so furious I almost chased after her, but my knee hurt too much.

I rolled up the leg of my jeans to check the injury.

It was not serious, but the scrape was deep enough to sting like hell.

I sat there for a long moment, catching my breath.

Then Lucas’s voice cut through the air.

“Lily? What are you doing on the ground?”
