I Dragged Him To The Exam And He Destroyed My Future For Her Chapter 10

My direct-entry Ph.D. admission letter arrived.

“Megan, congratulations. Professor Griffin’s group, full-rifle fellowship.”

Before I could even read the details, Charlotte was already bouncing beside me. “Megan! Direct Ph.D.! You’re insane!”

I put the letter in my bag. “Dinner tonight. I’m buying.”

“You better. It better be a feast.”

Back in the dorm, I took the letter out and snapped a photo.

It took me a few seconds to come up with a caption.

Finally, I typed: [This time, my future is mine.]

I set the phone down and thought about the past.

From waking up on that morning to now, several years had passed.

In my last life, at this point, I was cleaning up the mess after my enrollment was revoked. Future destroyed. Friends gone.

In this life, I was sitting in my dorm room at Ashford University with a direct-Ph.D. admission letter in my hand.

My phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number.

[Megan, I saw your Instagram post. Congratulations.]

[I know you don’t want to talk to me. But I still wanted to say I’m sorry.]

[From high school until now, I did so many wrong things. I shouldn’t have blocked the bus for Skylar. I shouldn’t have stopped everyone from running. I shouldn’t have told Skylar to file that complaint.]

[Back then, I really believed you ruined Skylar’s exam, so I wanted to make you pay. But I see now, it was all my fault.]

[If you can, I hope you’ll forgive me. Not so I can feel better. Because I genuinely know I was wrong.]

A long message. Earnest. Humble.

Charlotte peeked at my screen. “Chad? He still has the nerve to text you?”

“Yeah.”

“Aren’t you going to tear into him?”

I shook my head.

Honestly, cursing him out felt like a waste of my time at this point.

I just didn’t care anymore.

An apology from someone like that meant nothing.

That night, Charlotte dragged me to a BBQ place to celebrate the Ph.D. admission.

Midway through, Lily texted me. [Megan, congrats on the Ph.D. program! Saw your post on Instagram.]

I replied with a thank you.

The message bubble showed her typing for a long time. Finally:

[Megan, I’m sorry about what happened on exam day. I should have listened to you.]

I replied: [It’s over.]

[You’re doing so well now. I’m happy for you.]

[How are you?]

[I work at a design firm. It’s okay. Could be worse. Didn’t get into the school I wanted, but life’s fine.] She sent a smiley face.

[That’s good.]

[Megan, do you think we could meet up sometime? I want to thank you in person. If it weren’t for you that day, I wouldn’t even have the life I have now.]

I looked at her message for a moment.

[Maybe sometime.]

I put my phone down and zoned out for a second.

Charlotte grabbed a piece of brisket off the grill and dropped it onto her plate. “What are you thinking about?”

“Nothing, just old stuff.”

“Stop thinking about it. That’s all behind you. Look at you now: direct Ph.D, full-ride, Professor Griffin’s lab. In a few years you’ll be a big name in the research world.”

I smiled and raised my soda.

Charlotte clinked her bottle against mine.

“To the future.”

“To the future.”
