I Dragged Him To The Exam And He Destroyed My Future For Her Chapter 02

At 8:20, I was already halfway there.

Forty minutes until the exam started, plenty of time.

My phone buzzed again.

In the class group chat, someone posted: [Skylar’s finally here! The bus is leaving soon. Everyone line up and get on.]

8:20. She was only just arriving, so it’d be a few more minutes before the bus actually moved.

That was more than twenty minutes later than the original departure time.

I did the math. Under normal driving conditions, the trip from school to the test center took about twenty minutes, maybe a little longer for the bus.

In my last life, I’d pulled Chad onto the bus at 8:15 and we left. We still hit traffic near the end—parent drop-offs and poor traffic management caused a nearly twenty-minute jam on that stretch.

We barely made it inside before the doors closed.

This time, they were leaving even later.

I stood outside the testing center, watching the messages pile up.

[Finally moving. That scared me.]

[We’re fine, we’re fine. Plenty of time.]

[Megan, did you make it?]

Lily sent a private message: [Megan, are you there?]

I replied: [Yeah.]

[Good. We just left. Half an hour should be enough.]

I didn’t say anything else.

I’d just finished security screening and entered the school grounds when the tone in the chat shifted.

[Why aren’t we moving? Traffic?]

[Red light up ahead, lots of cars.]

[The driver says there’s traffic jam ahead. Might have to wait.]

Another five minutes passed, and the messages got more frequent.

[Still stuck? It’s been five minutes!]

[Megan, was it backed up when you went? Why didn’t you warn us?] That was Quentin.

I thought about it, then replied: [I got to the test center before 8:30. It wasn’t backed up then.]

[And you didn’t think to tell anyone?] Quentin sounded accusatory.

[It wasn’t backed up when I arrived. Besides, you guys hadn’t even left yet.]

[You couldn’t have given us a heads-up?]

I didn’t reply.

Fifteen minutes before the exam started, most people had put away their notes and headed toward their exam rooms.

The class chat kept buzzing, so I opened it again.

Someone posted a map screenshot showing the bus was still about two miles from the test center.

[Fifteen minutes till the exam starts! That whole stretch ahead is completely red!]

[What do we do? Bumper to bumper. Are we even going to make it?]

[We’re doomed.]

Lily messaged me privately: [Megan, I should’ve gone with you. We’re really screwed. Everyone’s going to be late.]

My chest tightened. In my last life, she was the only one who’d said a few words in my defense.

I did the math. Two miles, a slow jog would take twelve, thirteen minutes max.

If they got off now and ran, they’d still make it.

I replied: [You’re only two miles away. If you get off and run now, you’ll make it. Go.]

She didn’t reply.

A moment later, Lily called me, crying. “Megan, Chad won’t let me off the bus!”

She was sobbing loudly, and in the background, Chad was shouting.

“Nobody listen to her! Traffic will clear up before the exam. It’s going to start moving any second. If you get off and run, you’ll wear yourselves out before the first section even starts!”

Then Skylar’s voice came through. “Exactly. I just checked the map. There’s one intersection ahead. Once we clear it, we’re fine.”

Quentin jumped in to mediate. “Everyone calm down. Listen to Chad. Stay seated. Don’t go running off on your own and make things worse.”

“But we only have fifteen minutes left…”

Lily couldn’t stop crying, and Chad hurried over to reassure her.

“Plenty of time, two miles is a few minutes by car.”

I listened to the voices through the phone and felt a smirk tug at my lips.

Someone grabbed Lily’s phone. “Megan, were you serious? Running two miles?”

I thought for a second, then replied, “For a guy, ten minutes. For a girl, twelve or thirteen. Even if you’re a little late, you can still get in.”

Chad immediately exploded. “Easy for her to say. She took a ride-share and got there early. Of course she thinks two miles is easy. You’d show up out of breath and bomb the first section!”

“Exactly,” Skylar chimed in. “What if you trip and sprain something?”

The test center loudspeakers crackled, calling for everyone to enter.

“I’ve said what I needed to say. Do what you want.”
