I Did A Wedding Survey, And Exposed My Ten-Year-Long Love Betrayal Chapter 05

“Who canceled the wedding?”

Trevor stood there, like he hadn’t understood.

The manager pulled out his phone and showed him the chat log.

“See? Ms. Bennett notified us a week ago. The cancellation fee came out of her account/”

The bouquet hit the floor. Trevor stared at the screen–at that familiar profile picture-

and his blood ran cold.

Silence. The friends exchanged glances, no one daring to speak.

Finally, Grant frowned, as if remembering something.

“Wasn’t that the day you married Lila?”

Then Dylan slapped his forehead.

“Oh crap! She said ‘forget the wedding‘ that day–she actually meant it?”

Paige bit her lip.

“I was wondering why I hadn’t heard from Clara all week. She loves Trevor so much, she’d usually be running around planning everything right before the wedding-”

The friends all started talking at once, piecing together the truth: the wedding really was canceled.

I’d meant it when I said no wedding.

I’d meant it when I wished them well.

I’d meant it when I said we were done.

That realization hit Trevor like a thunderclap, sudden and deafening.

His friends kept talking, but he couldn’t hear a word.

He suddenly remembered my face that day–after he’d forced me to give blood.

Dead quiet.

Just like fourteen years ago, when I was thrown out of the Bennett house.

That was the look of someone who’d completely given up on someone they once loved.

Back then, the one I’d given up on was my father.

Now–it was him.

The moment that thought crossed his mind, Trevor felt like someone had him by the throat.

He could barely breathe.

He stopped caring about pride or dignity and started dialing my number like a madman.

But no matter how many times he called,

all he got was that cold automated voice.

“The number you have dialed is not in service.”

Seeing Trevor spiral, Grant pressed his lips together and grabbed his hand before he could dial

again.

“Stop… you’ve been blocked.”

“We’ve all been blocked.”

Blocked?

Trevor looked up blankly, like he didn’t understand the word.

Ten years together. I’d never taken more than two seconds to pick up his calls or reply to his texts.

And now I’d actually blocked him.

Paige stamped her foot.

“Clara’s being so dramatic! You and Lila just got the certificate–does she have to call off the whole wedding?”

Grant yanked at his collar in frustration.

“She’s probably just blowing off steam. She’ll come around.”

He said it louder than he meant to, like he was trying to convince himself.

Trevor felt the grip on his throat loosen. He could breathe again.

Right.

Blowing off steam.

Because he and Lila got married, so I was throwing a tantrum.

He took a few deep breaths, clinging to that shaky certainty to push down the panic.

“Has anyone talked to her this week?”

He looked around at each of his friends.

But every single one of them looked down, unable to meet his eyes.

Talk to me?

Who would talk to me?

Grant was mad at me for hurting Lila.

Paige was mad at me for ruining the wedding.

The others just followed along, excluding me, laughing at me.

The friends I’d kept close for ten years–the ones I’d been planning surprises for-

not a single one had ever stood by me.

They all looked at each other.

Finally, Dylan shuffled forward, avoiding Trevor’s gaze.

“Trevor… I think I heard my supervisor say… she quit.”

Trevor’s head snapped up.

“When?”

Dylan scratched his head, his voice dropping.

“Our company does business with their magazine, right?”

“I heard it a few days ago… but you didn’t seem to care, so I forgot to mention it…”

Quit.

I loved that job. I would never quit without a reason.

A wave of dread wrapped around him like vines, squeezing the air out of his lungs.

Trevor closed his eyes and forced down the rising panic with the last shred of composure he had.

“Find her.”

“Everyone. Find her. Now.”
