I looked her straight in the eye.

“You gonna say I forged the Wi-Fi logs? That I edited the date on the photo?”

“Or that the dash cam recording was faked?”

Lorenzo walked toward me.

“Mia, let’s go home and talk about this, okay?”

His voice was low.

Nothing like the Don Romano who ran all of Crest City’s underworld, the man everyone feared.

He sounded like just some guy scared of losing his wife.

“Go home and talk about what?” I cut him off.

“That it was just a moment of weakness? That you’ve always loved me? That it was all just a mistake?”

He froze, caught off guard by the question.

“Lorenzo,” I said, slow and deliberate, “can you say in front of all these people that you never loved her?”

He didn’t answer.

Silence said everything.

Lucy finally broke down crying.

Her perfectly done makeup ran completely.

She lunged at me, grabbing my arm, her nails digging almost through my skin.

“I’m sorry, I was wrong, I was so wrong… please forgive me? We’ve been friends for eighteen years…”

I looked down at her hand.

That same hand had tied my shoes for me when we were kids.

Wiped my tears when I had my first heartbreak.

I looked away and gently pulled my arm free.

I spoke softly. “You always said I spent too much time on him. You asked me so many times if our friendship meant less than some guy.”

“So today, I’m asking you the same thing.” I took a deep breath. “Does our friendship mean less than some guy?”

She couldn’t speak through the sobs.

Lorenzo took another step forward, reaching for me.

I stepped back, out of reach.

“Anything else you want to add?”

Lorenzo went quiet again.

I turned and walked off the stage.

I made my way through the lobby, doing my best to ignore all the stares, and headed for the exit.

Lorenzo called out behind me.

“MIA!”

This time, I didn’t look back.

By the time he caught up, I was already at the exit.

His hand clamped around my wrist-hard, his knuckles white.

He yanked me back hard enough that I stumbled. I turned and saw his eyes were red.

“Mia, just listen…”

His voice was shaking.

“It’s not what you think between me and Lucy. I messed up, I know I did… but I love you. It’s always been

you…”

“She threw herself at me first. She wouldn’t back off, no matter how I pulled away.”

He was talking faster and faster, like he was scared I’d vanish if he stopped.

“You can’t just throw away all these years together…”

“You done?”

He froze.

“I don’t want to hear your excuses. Because even now, you still won’t tell me the truth.”

The desperate look on his face hardened.

“No… Mia, just let me finish…”

“I admit it started as my fault. I didn’t handle the situation right, let her seduce me. But I regretted it right

“Remember that stretch where I was gone from Crest City for two whole months? I was avoiding Lucy.

“Then… you recommended her for the art foundation. I couldn’t avoid her anymore.

I laughed, bitter and sharp.

“So let me get this straight-this is all my fault?”

“If I hadn’t recommended her, you two never would’ve reconnected?”

He looked at me, hesitated.

“No, this is all on me. I’m the one who messed up…

“She came to see me one day, said she wanted to end things for good. Said we should put it all behind us,

your sake.”

His voice got quieter and quieter.

“That night, we had a few drinks… and then…”

Before he could finish, Lucy came running up.

“Mia, I know you’re furious right now, but I never meant to hurt you, I just…”

She could barely get the words out through the tears.

“But I never wanted to keep lying to you forever.”

Her words made my whole body shake.
