I Cared For Him Twenty Years, Only For His Love Letters To Belong To Another Girl Chapter 05

Derek shouted again, “Thorne! What is wrong with you? Your girlfriend is Vivian! She’s standing right

here!”

Vivian wiped her tears, playing the victim. “Thorne… is there something going on with you and Laurel?”

Their questions made Thorne’s eyes flicker with confusion. He froze in place, and the hand reaching toward

me slowly dropped.

“Thorne, come back. I know you’re just sick.”

“I know it’s hard for you to tell the difference sometimes. Whether Laurel’s your girlfriend or just someone

who takes care of you.”

“Think about the hundred love letters you wrote me. How can you not know who you love?”

With Vivian crying, Thorne turned back.

He pulled out that handkerchief and wiped her tears with surprising gentleness. “Don’t cry. I’m not

supposed to make you cry.”

The habit of carrying a handkerchief-I’d taught him that in my last life. Because of his condition, he’d get himself filthy without a care in the world.

I told him that if he was dirty, people would be disgusted and bully him. He should always carry a

handkerchief to clean himself up.

“Don’t make a girl cry” was another thing I’d taught him. I’d taken his hand and pressed it to my face, wet

with tears.

“How does it feel?”

“Cold.”

He put his finger in his mouth. “Also salty.”

“It’s not just salt. It’s bitterness. When you make a girl cry, that’s what her heart tastes like. So don’t make

girls cry.”

I never expected him to understand. He wasn’t stupid-he was ill.

If a simple explanation could fix him, the doctors would have cured him years ago.

He still made me cry plenty of times after that. He never learned how to hold me or comfort me.

And now, here he was using the things I’d taught him to wipe away someone else’s tears.

Maybe love really could heal anything. I almost laughed at my own thought.

Thorne and Vivian stood before me, hand in hand. Vivian leaned in close so only I could hear.

“Laurel, I know you came back too.”

“So what? You gave Thorne twenty years of your life. Your hands were wrecked. Your hair was gone. Your face aged twenty years overnight. And when he was dying, I was the one on his mind.”

“I didn’t even know he liked me. Now I know. And that spot as the genius’s wife? It’s mine.”

I blinked. In my last life, Vivian had been the one most disgusted by Thorne. The type to wrinkle her nose

and make a face the moment she saw him.

So I had no idea how he’d fallen for her.

I watched her smug expression and asked her flatly, “Have you thought about what it means to spend your

life with Thorne?”

“You ready to clean up after him every time he wets himself? Live with a guy who’ll never say ‘I love you’ like a normal person? Wait on him for the rest of your life?”

Vivian scoffed. “You think I’m as stupid as you? He makes tons of money, and it all goes to me. I’ll just hire

him a caregiver.”

Vivian was still so naive. Once she actually became the wife of a famous physicist, every eye in the world

would be on her.

She thought she’d just kick back and enjoy his money. But she’d end up having to handle every part of Thorne’s life on her own. And if she didn’t, people would eat her alive.

Fine. That suited me.

I wanted no part of that life this time anyway.
