I Came Back As A Zombie And They Wanted My Kidney Chapter 08

As she was led out in cuffs, Sera screamed the whole way. “I didn’t order it! My father did it himself! I just knew! I never told anyone to do anything!”

But the evidence wasn’t done.

A complete chain of proof—phone records, bank transfers, the driver’s sworn confession—placed her squarely at the center of the whole plot.

The squad car took her away.

The house went silent.

The priest packed his bag, and brushed off his pants.

“Alright. Take all the time you need to process this. I won’t mention the rest of the payment.”

“Not that Wren has much time left anyway.”

“Before sunrise, her body will fall apart completely. There won’t even be ash left.”

Dash grabbed the priest’s arm.

“You brought her back once! Do it again! Name your price!”

The priest pulled free.

“You think I’m a miracle worker? I can’t bring her back to life. Pulling her off that first time cost me everything I had.”

“These thirty days? You had a chance to give her something decent.”

Instead, you just hurt her.”

“The only mercy is that her brain works too slow to feel most of the pain. Otherwise, she’d be crying herself to sleep every night.”

“And zombies have a shelf life. Thirty days. Then the universe takes them back.”

“Ten billion won’t change that.”

He paused at the door and glanced back at me.

“Kiddo… I’m sorry. I dug you up in the first place because I was greedy.”

“I’ll make sure you see your parents on the other side.”

“Travel safe.”

The door clicked shut.

It was just the four of us.

Eleanor fell at my feet, clinging to my only remaining arm, her whole body shaking with violent sobs.

“Wren… I’m so sorry, baby… I didn’t know…”

Harrison huddled in the corner, his head buried in his hands, his shoulders shaking silently with suppressed grief.

Dash had blood on his lip from biting it.

He stared at my empty shoulder, at my deathly pale face, and broke completely.

“Your arm… I ripped it off…”

“I called you an animal. A monster.”

“I don’t deserve to be your brother.”

I sat on the sofa. Watched them cry.

Honestly? I couldn’t really wrap my head around what they were feeling.

Zombies don’t feel pain. Or much of anything.

Just scattered memories from when I was alive.

I remembered wanting to see them. So bad.

In my last minutes, trapped under the rubble, my mouth full of dust and blood, too weak to even whisper, I kept thinking: I wish I could meet my birth parents just once.

Now I had.

And I felt nothing.

“Stop crying.”

I patted her head awkwardly with my right hand.

“I was already dead.”

“Getting thirty days with you? That’s more than I expected. I’m lucky.”

She cried harder.

Dash turned away. Punched the wall. Again and again.

Harrison came to me.

He knelt down until his face was level with mine, then cupped my face gently in both hands, so careful it was like I’d crumble if he pressed too hard.

“I’m sorry.”

My face didn’t move.

But something warm slid down my right cheek.

I didn’t know what it was.
