I Came Back As A Zombie And They Wanted My Kidney Chapter 01

The day my parents put up a ten-million-dollar reward to find their missing daughter, a money-obsessed priest dug me out of a mass grave and brought me to a wealthy family manor.

Too bad I was already dead. Just a zombie with a thirty-day shelf life.

The priest warned me not to blow it before he got his final payment.

But someone had caved in my skull before I died. My brain worked slow. Like, molasses-in-January slow.

The fake heiress Seraphina ripped my dress and called me a braindead idiot who could barely get a full sentence out. I stared at her for ten whole seconds, then nodded stiffly in agreement.

My brother Dash tried to get back at me for Seraphina by street racing on the highway. I just pressed a hand to my face, holding my left eyeball in before it could jolt loose.

Two days later, my biological parents begged me to donate a kidney to their precious sick Sera.

“You stole all her attention the second you got here. Giving her one kidney is the least you owe her.”

“Relax. We’ll buy you the best supplements. You’ll want for nothing!”

Sera grinned at me. “Just between us? I’m not even sick. But I still want your kidney.”

I agreed.

I lay on the operating table for a while. Then it finally clicked.

I scrambled off the table and ran.

I’m a zombie. I don’t have kidneys to give.

Dash was the first to react. He stormed over and grabbed my collar.

“Wren, what on earth is wrong with you?”

“The surgery’s about to start. Get back in there!”

My brain short-circuited. Ten seconds crawled by.

“Need the bathroom,” I said slowly. “Didn’t wanna pee on the operating table.”

The hallway was silent.

Seraphina slumped in her wheelchair, tears streaming down her perfect face.

“She changed her mind, didn’t she?”

“It’s fine. I know that kidney matters more to her. I was always gonna die anyway. I don’t deserve to be saved.”

She clutched her chest and coughed like she was about to keel over. My mom, Eleanor, rushed to hold her.

“Don’t talk like that, Sera. You’re our family’s treasure. No one’s letting you die.”

“You’ve been such a good, filial daughter all these years. You’re gonna be okay.”

She turned to me, eyes burning.

“Wren, have you no conscience at all?”

“We spent a hundred million to bring you back. We’ve given you food, clothes, a roof over your head!”

“Now Sera needs your kidney to survive, and you’re running away?”

My dad Harrison’s voice dropped to something cold.

“Get back on that table. Now! This surgery is happening whether you like it or not.”

I stared at their angry faces.

But I felt nothing. Almost wanted to laugh.

They had no idea my body had been dead for months. No kidneys. No organs. Just dried-up jerky wrapped in skin.

If the surgeon opened me up, he’d have a heart attack on the spot.

But I couldn’t tell them that.

When the priest pulled me out of mass grave, he made it crystal clear.

“The Holloways are offering ten mil. I took the down payment. Five million’s still coming.”

“Keep your mouth shut for thirty days. Play the good daughter.”

“Pull this off, and you’ll get to see your foster parents in the underworld. Mess it up, and you’ll never see them again.”

For them, I had to hold it together.

“Really need that bathroom,” I repeated, my voice flat as cardboard.

Dash laughed, but there was no humor in it.

“Stop playing stupid. Get back in there!”

He grabbed my waist from behind and tried to drag me. Harrison and Eleanor grabbed my arms.

All three of them pulled with every ounce of strength they had. My feet stayed rooted to the floor, my hands clamped to the hallway corner.

Zombies don’t have much, but they’ve got strength.

They gasped for breath, dripping with sweat, but I didn’t move an inch.

Harrison flew into a rage, his usual refined gentleman act completely shattered.

“I should have left you buried deep down! How could you be so unfeeling!”

“If anything bad happens to Sera, I will never forgive you.”

Eleanor grabbed and yanked at my leg.

I didn’t feel a thing. I just worried chunks of my decaying body would tear loose.

That would blow my cover for good.

Sera put on her dying-girl act. “Stop fighting… Dash, Mom, Dad… please… just let it go…”

She tilted her head and passed out.

Doctors and nurses swarmed.

I let go of the wall and slipped into the bathroom in the chaos.

I pulled out my phone.

[They want my kidney!]

I texted the priest.

He replied instantly:[HOLD THE LINE. Three days till payment. Don’t blow it.]

I sighed. This was going to be a long month.
