I Came Back As A Zombie And They Wanted My Kidney Chapter 04

Two days locked in my room, and my condition had deteriorated sharply.

I’d completely run out of the priest’s preservation pills.

My left shoulder started coming loose. Even the lightest tug threatened to pop it clean out of the socket.

My skin felt like old leather, clinging tight to my bones like dried, brittle tree bark.

I wore long sleeves and pants. Covered everything.

Just one more day. If I made it through tonight, I’d finally get to see my foster parents. I wanted to tell them all about meeting my birth parents.

I wasn’t happy. I missed them.

Then Sera pushed open my door.

“Bored yet?”

She walked in with a sweet, innocent smile, but cold malice glinted sharp in her eyes.

“Mom, Dad, and Dash are taking me to a fancy banquet tonight. You’ll be stuck here all by yourself. How tragic for you.”

I sat on the edge of the bed. Turned to look at her. Didn’t speak.

She grabbed my left wrist.

“Come on. Let’s get some air.”

She was surprisingly strong, yanking me roughly toward the balcony without warning.

I didn’t dare struggle free, terrified I’d yank my own arm right off in the process.

We stepped outside. Below, car headlights sliced through the dark garden.

Harrison, Eleanor, and Dash were home.

A sinister smile curled across Seraphina’s face.

She let go of my hand. Backed up against the railing.

“Please don’t!”

Her voice went high and shrill.

“I said I’d stop asking for your kidney! Why are you still trying to kill me?”

Down below, my family looked up.

They looked up just in time to see Seraphina half-hanging over the railing, teetering dangerously on the edge.

And me, standing right in front of her.

“Sera!”

Dash was blind with rage, sprinting into the house and bounding up the stairs two at a time.

Sera whispered. “You’re done, Wren.”

She tilted sideways, ready to slip and collapse onto the balcony floor to make it look like I’d shoved her.

I watched her, processing.

The door slammed open.

Dash was there.

The second he saw Seraphina on the floor, he snapped completely. “You vicious witch! Get away from her!”

He lunged at me, gripping my left arm with both hands and yanking hard to the side.

He stumbled back, something in his hands.

Sera stopped crying.

Dash stared at what he was holding.

My whole left arm. Ripped clean from the shoulder.

No blood gushed out—only dried, blackened flesh and a jagged end of stark white bone.

Harrison and Eleanor got to the balcony and collapsed.

Eleanor let out a shrill, distorted scream, then her eyes rolled back and she fainted dead away.

Sera scrambled backward, pale as death.

Dash dropped the arm.

It hit the floor with a dull, dry slap.

He looked at my empty shoulder. Couldn’t speak.

I stared at the arm on the floor.

It took me a full minute to wrap my head around what had happened.

Well, that’s not good.

I pulled out my phone with my good hand and texted the priest.

[I think they figured it out.]

I shoved the phone back in my pocket. Looked at my frozen family.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you.”

“Can I get my arm back?”

“I can still reattach it, probably.”
