I Bit My Best Friend Until The System Spoiled Me Chapter 07

The system claimed that this was simply because he was too tired to put on an act anymore, finally laying his hatred for me completely bare out in the open.

We walked forward in a heavy silence when my phone suddenly vibrated. It was Lucas.

[Ethan literally looks like a miserable widower whose wife just ran off with another man right now.]

I used to think Lucas was just a dull, stiff nerd, but it turned out he actually had a massive sarcastic streak in private.

The system, however, scoffed at his text entirely.

[Straight-A students really are missing a romance gene. He can’t even tell the difference between hatred and affection. Can’t he see the Male Lead is completely repulsed by you?]

I fired back a meme and was just about to shove my phone away when I realized Ethan had stopped dead in his tracks.

The faint, golden sunset stretched our shadows out incredibly long. Ethan’s face looked just as long and drawn; his entire posture practically radiated that he was in an utterly foul mood.

“Chloe, can we talk?”

His voice carried a barely perceptible trace of bitterness, and his eyes were dark and bottomless.

I gave a slow nod, and Ethan walked shoulder-to-shoulder with me toward our houses.

The scent on him hadn’t changed a bit over all these years, yet I felt the friction between us growing stranger by the second.

“I feel like… you’ve been avoiding me lately. Though maybe it’s just my imagination.”

His Adam’s apple bobbed as he continued.

“You said you wanted to cure your biting fixation, so in the future…”

His voice caught in his throat, as if the words he was about to speak were causing him physical pain.

“When you said you don’t need me anymore, is it because… you found someone you need more?”

I kept my eyes glued to the pebbles beneath my shoes.

“I just think we’re adults now, and going around gnawing on each other isn’t right. You’ll have your own…”

The words Female Lead choked in my throat, so I quickly pivoted to a different phrasing.

“You’ll have a girlfriend in the future, and I’ll have a boyfriend too.”

The exact millisecond those last words left my mouth, Ethan’s hand shot out and violently grabbed my wrist.

The boy’s slender fingers were clenched so tightly they turned an unnatural, deathly white, and a terrifying storm seemed to erupt deep within his dark eyes.

“Chloe, who told you that? You never used to think about things like this. Who the hell has been talking to you…”

My phone buzzed again, another text from Lucas popping onto the screen.

Ethan’s gaze locked onto my screen before shifting down to land heavily on my arm, his expression unreadable and dark.

“When exactly did you see this therapist? If you already went, why are you still chewing on yourself?”

I stammered, entirely at a loss, not daring to admit that I hadn’t actually gone yet.

After a long stretch of silence, Ethan spoke again, his voice terrifyingly raspy.

“I know a specialist who’s a lot more professional. I’ll send you their contact info later.”

I wanted to decline, but I knew Ethan would just use my current “unprofessional” therapist as an excuse to shoot me down.

So, in the end, I just nodded and agreed.

The system was instantly moved to tears by Ethan’s saintly behavior again.

[The Male Lead is literally an angel. He’s so warm-hearted—even though he hates your guts, he’s still introducing you to a therapist.]

[Do you know why he happens to know a specialist? I bet he’s been wanting you to get professional help for years but was just too polite to bring it up. Meanwhile, you were just gnawing away every single day, leaving him with a mountain of unspoken misery. He was literally just waiting for you to bring it up yourself!]

It was too loud, and I was deeply irritated.

I quickened my pace, leaving Ethan lagging behind me, yet I couldn’t shake the distinct, icy chill lingering down my spine.

The second I stepped through my front door, my phone started ringing.

I slid the screen to answer; it was Lucas.

“You didn’t reply to my texts. I was genuinely terrified your cuckolded husband had sliced you into choice meat.”

His tone was entirely filled with absolute schadenfreude, making me knit my brows in frustration.

“What kind of absolute nonsense are you—”

A sharp knock sounded at the door. Without even thinking, I pulled the door open.

Ethan was standing on the porch, his expression masked in a calm, distant look.

“The specialist is only free on Sunday. That’s still two days away. If you’re struggling, you can just bite me first, just like we used to…”

My eyes widened in pure panic, and I scrambled to slam my hand over the phone’s speaker.

Lucas, completely oblivious on the other end, was still blabbering away, asking if Ethan had slaughtered me yet, adding that Ethan’s eyes looked like literal daggers this afternoon.

The boy on the other end of the line had no idea what was happening, but Ethan, standing right in front of me, caught every single bit of it.
