I Bit My Best Friend Until The System Spoiled Me Chapter 04

I was dying of embarrassment, and the system went silent.

[Are you an NPC trying to unlock the villainess ending? Because that was peak pick-me behavior.]

Terrified that Ethan might think the same thing, I grabbed the tumbler, intending to wash it for him, but he stopped me.

“You already drank it, so just finish it. I’ll wash it myself later.”

He stood right in front of me, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that his gaze was fixed intently on my lips.

The next time I brought the tumbler to my mouth and felt that scorching gaze lock onto me again, I physically couldn’t swallow another sip.

The system was throwing an absolute tantrum in my head.

[Every time you take a sip, the Male Lead stares. Look at him—his face is completely flushed with rage.]

[Do you know why he won’t let you wash it? Because he’s literally planning on throwing this cup in the trash the second he gets a chance.]

Sure enough, the next day, I saw that Ethan had switched to a completely different tumbler.

It felt like a thick wad of cotton was stuffed in my chest; a heavy wave of sadness washed over me.

For the first time, it hit me with brutal clarity: Ethan, my childhood best friend who had spoiled and indulged me for as long as I could remember, actually hated me.

He hated my touch. He hated everything about me. Anything I laid my hands on, he replaced.

So, when the final bell rang, I listened to the system and left school early on my own.

By the time Ethan walked back to our neighborhood, I was up on the second-floor balcony hanging up laundry.

Slinging his backpack over one shoulder, he walked down the road from a distance looking like a character who had stepped straight out of a graphic novel.

Even from afar, I could tell his expression was incredibly dark.

He’s walking toward my house. Is he coming to demand why I didn’t wait for him today? What am I even supposed to say?

While I was spiraling in hesitation, the system let out a soft snort.

[He literally prays every day that you’ll stay as far away from him as possible. There is no way in hell he’s coming to see you.]

I half-mindedly continued hanging the clothes, the hangers letting out a soft rustling sound. Down below, the boy suddenly froze in his tracks.

Ethan lifted his head, and our eyes locked. I awkwardly stopped what I was doing, a half-hung shirt frozen in my hands.

“Chloe, why did you walk home by yourself today…”

The rest of his sentence cut off instantly. Ethan’s gaze locked onto something for a fraction of a second before his face completely exploded into a violent, bright crimson.

Without another word, he spun around and practically bolted back into his own house.

The system was laughing so hard it could barely function.

[What did I tell you? Look at how panicked he was when he practically fled the scene. He literally can’t run away from you fast enough.]

I felt a sudden lump in my throat, almost wanting to cry. It had been two whole days since I last had a fix; my jaw felt incredibly itchy, my chest felt suffocated, and everything was just intensely frustrating.

Hanging the rest of the laundry back up, I spent the evening biting down hard on my own arm while using my phone to book an appointment with a specialist for Sunday.

The next morning, I ran into Ethan right outside my front gate.

He walked silently by my side. The ambient noise of the morning—the chatter of commuters, the sharp ring of bicycle bells, the distant shouts of street vendors—felt amplified to an unbearable degree within our heavy, quiet atmosphere.

“Why did you leave by yourself yesterday without waiting for me?”

We were almost at the school gates when Ethan finally broke the silence.

“Lucas’s mom came to pick him up, so she offered to drop me off on the way.”

I dragged my desk mate out to act as a meat shield, but the air around us only seemed to grow even more suffocatingly tense.

“Since when did you and he get so close?”

Something dark and heavy seemed to be swirling deep within Ethan’s eyes as he knit his brows and spoke.

I bit my lip softly.

“We’re desk mates. When you sit next to someone all day, you just naturally get close.”

Another suffocating stretch of silence followed before Ethan’s voice dropped, sounding a pitch rasplier than before.

“It’s been three days since you last bit me. Are you struggling? Come over to my room after school today, I…”

Normally, I could go a day and a half at most before needing to use Ethan to soothe my jaw. It had already been three full days since I last approached him.
