Diana blinked and leaned in. “So… how was Elian?”

“Brute strength and endless energy.” I stretched my aching back. “He rode three days without

sleep and still went all night. Young people have unbelievable stamina.”

“Oh, that’s… okay…”

“Sis, is he mean? Will he hurt people?”

I thought for a moment. “No, not really. But he cries a lot.”

“Cries?”

“The more upset he gets, the redder his eyes get.”

Diana gasped. “What a strange personality.”

I patted her shoulder meaningfully. “You’re too young to understand the fun in that.”

We exchanged a look and sighed at the same time.

We’d slept with the wrong men by mistake, but when we thought about it, the outcome wasn’t

all bad.

“Let’s just say we tested each other’s fiancés in advance.” I clenched my fist.

“They’re family. No outsiders benefited.” She clenched hers too.

“Yeah… right…”

We felt much better after convincing ourselves.

Even though the pairings were mixed up, they’d ended up surprisingly fitting.

“Why don’t… we just switch engagements?”

I was just thinking about how to tell Father when he spoke first.

“Get dressed. We’re visiting the Waldergrove manor.”

Diana and I locked eyes and both shrank back.

I cleared my throat and spoke stiffly. “Father, we talked privately last night. I actually prefer

younger men.”

Father frowned. “And?”

“Diana’s innocent and naive. She’d suit someone calm and sharp. They’d balance each other.”

I spoke more smoothly. “So…. why don’t we switch engagements?”

Father’s eyes flared. “Switch? Absolutely not!”

“Diana’s too much of a fool to match Rowan, that cunning old fox. He’d manipulate her

completely. She’d be sold and not even know it.”

Diana muttered unhappily. “I’m not that stupid…”

“Be quiet!” Father turned back to me. “And you! Elian’s young and fierce, but he’s stationed at

the border year-round. You want rumors and trouble at home?”

I mumbled quietly. “It’s not that dramatic.”

“Not dramatic? You think I don’t know about your little flings at Silver String Hall?”

I shrank back immediately and said nothing.

I gathered my courage and tried again. “Father, we don’t actually have to go through with this

engagement.”

“A royal decree can’t be changed on a whim.” Father’s tone was cold.

I cursed inwardly: this was all your big mouth in front of the king.

He suddenly sighed and began to whine.

“Your mother died young. I raised you two alone, pouring my heart into it. The court is full of

scheming. Nobles push you around at every turn. I’ve held on by a thread… all I want is for

you to marry into top noble families, secure our house, and keep our dignity…”

Diana and I exchanged a helpless look and sighed together. “Alright Father, we’ll do as you

say.”

Father instantly dropped the sad act and urged us flatly. “Let’s go.”
