My heart suddenly tightened. I remembered something deadly important.

Where was Diana?

Had things gone wrong for her too?

“Stay here quietly and wait for my word.”

I left the feverish Elian behind and hurried back to our manor.

As soon as I walked in, I ran into Father, just back from court.

He saw me returning so late and scowled.

“Isolde Karel, out carousing again, staying out all night!”

My heart raced. I forced a nervous laugh.

“Heh, why are you home so early today, Father?”

Father’s face darkened. “The palace was supposed to honor the Knight Commander for his border victory today. Elian rode for three days without sleep, then wore himself out half the night. He collapsed and couldn’t attend. Even his brother, the important minister, took the day

off.”

He muttered in frustration.

“I don’t know who was so cruel to wear out my future son-in-law. What if he’s hurt?”

I was so guilty I wanted to bury my head in my chest. I couldn’t look up.

Father scanned the hall and frowned.

“Where’s Diana? Off stuffing her face again?”

As he spoke, Diana crept through the doorway, tiptoeing.

“I… I’m back…”

“Why is your face so red?”

“I have a fever…” she mumbled.

“You have a fever too?” I gasped.

She hesitated. “Last night… I ate too much. It’s just indigestion…”

Father looked disgusted. “You glutton. You managed to eat yourself sick?!”

No.

I cornered Diana.

“Tell me the truth. What could you eat to get a fever?”

She avoided my eyes. “Just…. ch-chicken…

“You’re lying through your teeth!”

I squeezed her face. “Who did you sleep with last night?!”

“J-just Elian…” Her voice got smaller and smaller.

“Bullshit! I slept with Elian!”

“Wha-?” Her eyes went wide.

She covered her face and wailed. “I tested his brother… Rowan… waaaah we’re doomed!”

“What are we going to do, sister?!”

I took a deep breath and held her shoulders. “Calm down. Look on the bright side-they’re the

same family.”

“Let’s stick to the important stuff.”

I leaned close and lowered my voice. “Rowan’s twenty-eight. Is he still strong enough?”

Diana’s face burned bright red. “W-well… he’s okay.”

“What do you mean okay?”

“He’s….” She twisted herself into a knot. “I thought he’d be past it at twenty-eight, but he’s

more than okay.”

“Be specific.”

“Stop asking!” The tips of her ears were smoking. “I have a fever, okay?!”

I got the message.

It wasn’t just okay.

It was more than capable.

“Did you pay him off afterward?” I asked.

Diana whispered, “I gave him a small pouch of silver coins.”

“Thirty pieces?!” I slapped my thigh. “I gave Elian three pouches of gold!”

“Why did you give him that much?”

“I felt guilty! He looked at me with those red, sad eyes and I just…..”

“Sister,” she said seriously, “you inflated the market. You broke the rules.”

“I know!” I banged the wall in regret. “Three gold pouches! That’s three more years of

membership at Silver String Hall!”
