His Younger Self’s AI Loved Me More Than He Did Chapter 07

His Younger Self’s AI Loved Me More Than He Did Chapter 07

A spark of hope lit Ethan’s eyes, like a dying man grasping at a lifeline.
Right. If she’d left something for him on purpose, she couldn’t have really left for good. This was definitely just another tantrum. She’d purposely left a clue for him to come get her.

He stumbled up from the couch and rushed into the study, tearing through everything. He yanked open the desk drawers one by one, roughly shoving aside files and contracts. Papers scattered everywhere. His hands were trembling, searching every corner frantically.

He was mumbling to himself like a madman, “She wouldn’t leave. She must’ve just left an address for me to pick her up…”

Until he pulled open the very bottom drawer. His fingers hit a hard cardboard document envelope.

Ethan’s hand shook as he pulled it out. The envelope wasn’t sealed. The papers inside slipped out and scattered across the floor. The top one was a diagnosis from the Fairview Mental Health Center.

[Patient: Zara Davis.]

[Diagnosis: Major Depressive Disorder with severe somatic symptoms.]

Dated four months ago.

Ethan stared at those words for a very long time. All those messages she’d sent him over the past six months—he hadn’t replied, but he’d read them. She had never once mentioned any of this.

What shook him even more was the document underneath it. A surgical consent form.

[Procedure: Dilation and Curettage.]

The guardian signature line was blank.

[Patient signature: Zara Davis.]

Dated three months ago. Ethan felt the room spinning.

She had been pregnant. Zara had actually been pregnant. And the pregnancy was confirmed just days after he’d vanished without a word and left that AI companion at home. But his eyes locked onto the words Dilation and Curettage.

A searing pain wrenched his heart. The miscarriage was three months ago… Then he remembered. That day, Maya had insisted on shopping for baby things. He’d spent the entire day with her.

That afternoon, his phone had been buzzing nonstop. He’d looked at the caller ID. Zara.

He figured Maya’s situation was more urgent, and Zara was probably just calling to ask when he’d be back.

So he’d hit silent without a second thought and tucked the phone back into his pocket. And all that time, his wife had been lying on an operating table, miscarrying their child all alone.

“No… this can’t be…” Ethan collapsed onto the floor, eyes red, repeating it over and over. He’d arrogantly assumed that leaving his AI companion at home would perfectly fill the void of his absence.

He thought she’d be a little lonely at most, nothing serious. But this whole time, she’d been drowning in a swamp of agony all by herself.
He had killed his own flesh and blood with his own hands, and in
doing so, he had utterly driven away the Zara whose heart had only
ever held him.

Ethan covered his face with his hands and broke down into ragged
sobs. In the living room, the AI companion picked up the faint sound.
It turned its head, hollow eyes staring toward the study.

“Welcome home, Ethan Davis.”

Those four words that were once warm now echoed through the
dead, empty room with the cruelest irony.
