His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 31

Sarah refused to give up. “The way he looked at you was different for ages. He was just too stupid and proud to see it. Now that you’re gone, he’s finally figured it out!”

I was quiet for a few seconds, then let out a soft breath.

“That’s his business,” I said calmly. “It has nothing to do with me anymore.”

On the first day of classes, the main lecture hall in the architecture school was packed.

Sunlight poured through the large windows. The air smelled of paper, coffee, and new beginnings. I sat near the back, laying out my drawing board and notebook.

Just as the professor was about to begin, a small commotion stirred at the classroom door.

A tall, straight-backed figure walked in, silhouetted against the light. Whispers immediately broke out across the room.

The person didn’t stop. He walked directly through the rows of seats, his target clear as he headed straight for me.

My heartbeat quickened.

Was it Caleb? Had he actually found me?

But as the person drew closer, I saw him clearly.

It wasn’t Caleb.

It was the Asian boy who had given me hot cocoa at the welcome event.

Liam.

He still had that same bright, easy smile as he waved at me.

“Hi, Elara.”

Then he sat down in the empty seat beside me as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

That familiar wariness returned, and I instinctively shifted my chair slightly away.

Liam noticed. The smile on his face faded a little. He turned toward me, not taking out a computer or notebook like the other students, just looking at me quietly.

The sounds around us seemed to recede.

I could feel his gaze, serious and a little probing. I didn’t like it.

“Elara,” he said softly, looking into my eyes, “do you really… not remember me at all?”
