“But the strangest one of all is Caleb Sterling,” Sarah said suddenly, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.

Hearing that name, I frowned. It was a name I had already struck from my life.

“What about him?”

“He’s acting like he’s lost his mind,” Sarah said bluntly. “After the hearing, he was looking for you everywhere. He asked everyone where you went, which school you transferred to. No one would tell him. And do you know what he did next? He applied for leave and went straight to the East Coast. Said he was going to find you!”

The pencil in my hand stopped moving. What rose in my heart wasn’t emotion, but confusion.

Find me? What for?

Shouldn’t he be cleaning up the Davenports’ mess and protecting the honor of their precious circle?

“Elara, are you serious? Don’t you get it?” Sarah was practically frantic. “He obviously regrets it! He wants to win you back! He must have finally realized he likes you!”
