Back in his dorm, Caleb sat heavily on his bed.

He stared at the ceiling, but all he could see was my calm face at the hearing.

He grabbed the military terminal from his desk. The cadet communication system had completely exploded. Countless posts were frantically tagging Elara Vance, discussing her astonishing transcript, dissecting the Honor hearing that had reversed so quickly. But I had vanished as if from the face of the earth, without a single response.

Caleb instinctively opened his private chat with me.

He had thought that after such a huge incident, even if I ignored everyone else, I would still come to him.

Whether to explain or to mock him.

There should have been something.

But the chat window was empty. The most recent message was one he himself had sent weeks ago.

He frowned, a fresh wave of irritation rising in his chest. Where had that Elara Vance gone, the one who used to message him so often he’d had to mute her? Something this major had happened, and she hadn’t sent him a single word.

Her silence made him even more agitated.

Then a thought struck him.

It had been a long time since she had contacted him at all.

Caleb’s heart sank. His fingers flew as he scrolled up through their chat history, and only then did he realize that for several weeks, I hadn’t sent him a single message.

So the peace and quiet he thought he’d been enjoying wasn’t because I had finally learned my place.

It was because I had already started to pull away.

The feeling of being completely shut out seized him.
