His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 12

Build houses, not go to the Pentagon.

How had he answered her then? He couldn’t remember. Maybe he had just scoffed in disdain. Maybe he hadn’t even glanced at her. A person who could barely pass physical training suddenly claiming she had other ambitions had sounded like a joke.

But it hadn’t been a joke.

It had been her path.

Only now did Caleb belatedly realize that many of the “silly things” Elara had said had actually been the truth.

For a moment, he nearly lost control.

The first emotion that surfaced was anger. Not at me, but at himself. A girl he had always dismissed as a fool had deceived everyone, including him. Thinking back on all his superior judgments, he felt as if each one was a slap in the face.

But beneath the anger was something heavier.

A sharp sense of defeat, and an irritability he couldn’t explain.

He had always thought he was looking down on me from a great height. Now he realized that perhaps, from the very beginning, I had been the one with the clearer view.

“Caleb?” Isabelle called his name again, annoyed. “What are you spacing out for? Elara lied to us. Aren’t you angry?”

Caleb abruptly stood up.

The movement was so sudden it made Isabelle jump. “Where are you going?”

“Back to the dorm.”

He left only those three words behind, then cut through the crowd and strode away.

He needed to be alone. More accurately, he needed to re-evaluate everything he thought he knew about Elara Vance.
