Ten days later, Ryan and I left for Lake Tahoe.

We stayed in a small cabin by the lake for three months.

I planted flowers. He planted trees.

One day, I insisted on watching him play basketball. He took the chubby kid from next door and headed to

the court.

Sweat–dampened hair stuck to his face as he moved with the same bright, confident energy he had back in

college.

In that moment, something in my memory cracked open. The man in front of me slowly overlapped with the

boy from my past.

That year, I was a freshman.

I had a huge crush on an upperclassman and would secretly go watch him play basketball.

But so many girls liked him. I didn’t dare tell him.

Later, Sophie found out and offered to get his contact for me.

The night I got his number, I stayed up refreshing his empty social media feed, too nervous to sleep.

Typical golden boy–even his social media was ice–cold.

The next day, I finally worked up the courage to send a weak “Good morning.”

He replied instantly.

“Evelyn Quinn, right? I heard you like me. But I don’t like you. Please stop showing up in front of me. You

make me sick.”

His words cut like knives, shattering my teenage dreams.

That night, I drank alone at a bar. Sophie showed up with Logan.

From then on, Logan started chasing me relentlessly.

With Sophie’s help, I slowly fell for him.

I got lost in that fairytale where my best friend and boyfriend were both by my side.

Until everything fell apart later.

My thoughts were still drifting when a gentle voice pulled me back.

What are you thinking about? You look so lost.”

I looked up and asked the question that had lingered for years.

“Do you have a secret account?”

He didn’t understand but answered patiently anyway.

“No. Just one. The username is NY–for Evie.”

“I’ve used it since the day I met you.”

I let out a soft laugh. In that moment, I finally understood.

The cold, distant “golden boy” had all been Sophie and Logan’s manipulation.

“What are you smiling about?”

I shook my head lightly and leaned against his shoulder.

We watched the sunset together.

Thankfully, we still had plenty of time.

Time to make up for all the years that had been stolen from us.
