His Love Letter Was Meant For Someone Else Chapter 04

The edge of my phone scraped hard against my earlobe. A sharp sting shot through me, and warm blood immediately began to seep slowly down the side of my neck.

Janet cowered behind Elijah, crying her eyes out.

“Elena, I’m giving Elijah back to you. Please just help me explain this to the teacher, okay? If my parents find out, they’ll kill me.”

I pressed my hand to the bleeding cut and put the pieces together.

On this month’s exam, Janet’s score had plummeted by over a hundred points.

She and Elijah had never bothered to hide their relationship at school, and finally the teacher had gotten fed up and called them out. They’d decided to blame all of this on me.

“What does this have to do with me! You two weren’t scared when you were making out behind the curtain, why are you taking it out on me now that you got caught?” I snapped, clutching my injured ear and staring them straight down.

Elijah’s face darkened even more. He pulled Janet into his protective arms and snapped back, “You went straight to the office right before the teacher found out. What a coincidence that could be, there’s no way that’s just luck.”

He gave me a long, heavy look. “Whatever. You’ve always been this selfish.”

Weekend rolled around. I was at home quietly packing my luggage for Harvard University. Elijah didn’t know about this, and there was no reason for him to.

But I never expected him to show up at my door, reaching out to me for the first time in ages.

“Elena, I broke up with Janet.”

He watched my face carefully, and stepped forward to reach for my hand.

“These past few months, I’ve been studying until I’m about to break. I tried my hardest and I still can’t keep up with you. That’s why I did all those messed-up things. My grades are only good enough for a local college, Elena… Does the promise we made a long time ago still count?”

When we were kids, Elijah and I pinky-promised we’d go to the same college when we grew up.

I looked at Elijah quietly. He didn’t even realize it himself—he blinkes when he lied.

Harvard only offered one acceptance spot in our state every single year.

How wronged must poor Elijah feel, putting up with dating someone he didn’t even like just to pave the way for Janet.

“Okay.” I didn’t want any more trouble, so I nodded and agreed right away.

Elijah looked shocked, then his face lit up with pure joy. His gaze drifted automatically to my half-packed luggage.

“Why are you packing all of a sudden?”

I shook my head and made up a quick excuse. “My mom’s going on a business trip.”

Elijah was already too excited to think twice about it. He hurriedly said goodbye, nodding eagerly. “Got it! See you next Monday, Elena!”

I watched him rush off, and the faint sound of him calling Janet to tell her the good news drifted back to me.

I looked back one last time at our yard. In the corner, the flower Elijah and I had planted with our own hands had long since wilted.

I looked away, calmly got into the car that would take me to the airport, and blocked and deleted all of Elijah’s contact information before I boarded the plane.

“Elijah, I’m not playing this game with you anymore.”
