His Love Letter Was Meant For Someone Else Chapter 03

Elijah stuck right behind Janet the whole time. I glanced down at the milk in my hand, and tossed it straight into the trash can.

Janet’s eyes turned red at the sight.

“What do you mean, Elena! Janet is sincerely apologizing to you! Why do you have to be so unreasonable and push people away?”

Elijah’s face darkened immediately, and he yelled at me in front of the whole class.

I was silent for a second, then a mocking smile tugged at my lips. “I’m allergic to strawberries…”

“Stop making excuses! Elena, why do you always throw a fit every time I talk to another girl?”

Before I could finish, Elijah cut me off, like he’d run out of patience. He grabbed Janet’s hand and stormed off.

“I’m not your property! I don’t owe you all my time and attention!”

I looked at their retreating backs and let out a bitter laugh.

Elijah forgot. When we were kids, he stole two strawberries when he was being naughty.

He fed one to me, and I ended up in the ICU that night…

I stayed in the hospital for a week. The day I got discharged, Elijah cried and swore he’d never let me have another allergic attack.

After that day, Elijah gave me the silent treatment.

He saved Janet a seat, brought her lunch, stopped waiting for me in the morning, and detoured half an hour just to pick Janet up instead.

All the little kindnesses that used to be only mine were now openly given to someone else.

The gossip from my classmates drifted into my ears.

“I thought Elijah and Elena were going to end up together, I can’t believe Janet stole him away.”

“Childhood sweetheart can’t beat the new girl. Poor Elena.”

I tuned them all out, and focused on every single class.

Maybe he heard the gossip, because Elijah awkwardly came to find me. “Janet has really fragile pride. You shouldn’t have embarrassed her like that in front of everyone, no matter what.”

As he spoke, he set something down on my desk, his face relaxing, his eyes full of expectation. “If you’ll just apologize to Janet, everything can go back to how it was before.”

I looked up. A thin slip of paper lay on the desk.

The edges were already worn, the handwriting was messy, and it just said two crudely written words: [Make-up Coupon.]

I almost found it funny, but I couldn’t make myself smile at all.

I picked up the make-up coupon coldly, and tore it into tiny pieces in a few seconds.

Elijah’s face froze instantly. He said nothing, turned around with a cold face, and left.

The next day, Elijah asked the teacher to change his seat. He moved from next to me to sit beside Janet.

In math class, I raised my hand to answer a question. The second I stood up, I saw them holding hands under the desk, hidden from the teacher.

If his earlier coldness had still been a bit of deliberate stubbornness, a test to see how I’d react, Elijah was now treating me like I was completely invisible. In contrast, his relationship with Janet heated up fast.

It wasn’t until the last mock exam before the SAT that the teacher called me into the office.

“Congratulations, Elena! You’ve received an early admission offer from Harvard University.”

Huge surprise hit me out of nowhere. I stood frozen, unable to get my words out.

The teacher smiled and patted my shoulder. “It’s your choice whether you start early, or stay to take the entrance exam for the experience.”

I walked out of the office in a daze, and immediately ran straight into Elijah and Janet.

Elijah pressed his lips together, and walked right past me without looking at me.

After a quick call to my parents to talk it over, I decided to leave for Harvard next Monday.

It was a bit of a rush, but I’d already checked. Harvard had a volunteer research program open to new students, and selected volunteers got to go to Antarctica for a month.

This would be the closest I’d ever been to my dream.

I was just on the phone when Elijah suddenly ran over, swung his arm hard, and slapped my phone right out of my hand.

“Elena, how dare you go tattle to the teacher! That’s so low!”
