His Last Mistake Was Letting Me Go Chapter 03

His Last Mistake Was Letting Me Go Chapter 03

“Evelyn, I was standing right there when my brother bought you that necklace.”

Bianca Hale, Adrian’s sister and my so-called best friend, had arrived too. She went on, “I even asked Adrian to buy me one too, but it turned out to be one of a kind. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten that.”

Adrian’s mother gave me a contemptuous glance. “What would an ungrateful woman like her ever bother to remember?”

I remembered everything.

They were the ones who had forgotten.

Back then, Bianca had been the one who told me the Hale family was struggling, and that her mother was so worried about Adrian’s marriage she could barely sleep at night.

She said she knew I was not the kind of woman who cared only about money and asked me to give her brother a chance.

On our wedding day, Adrian’s mother had cried tears of joy and said the Hale family must have been blessed to find such a considerate daughter-in-law.

So when had all of that changed?

When we got married, my family did not ask him for a house, a car, or any real money. All they accepted was a token family gift, more symbolic than anything else.

There was no house, no car, no cushioned start waiting for us.

I had never chosen a husband based on those things. What mattered to me was character and ability. As for money, I could handle that myself.

Before any of us in the younger generation had a child, my family did place certain limits on the resources we could access. Even so, what I could use was more than enough to help Adrian rise far beyond where he had started.

It seemed they had never once wondered why Adrian’s business kept thriving when the Hale family had no background, no connections, and no real foundation of its own.

As Adrian’s business grew more successful, Bianca began putting on airs in front of me, acting as if being Adrian’s sister gave her authority over me and criticizing everything I did.

His mother also started finding fault with me at every turn.

Even Adrian’s temper grew worse and worse. I used to think marriage was simply like that, something people had to keep compromising through.

Now I knew better.

When I stayed silent, Adrian’s mother snapped, “What are you standing there for?”

“Take off the necklace and give it to Sienna.”

Sienna sat there watching me with a faint, taunting smile.

It was as if she were saying, So what if you were his wife for six years? The moment I came back, you still had to step aside.

Today, I did not want these vile people and their petty cruelty to ruin my mood. I did not want to waste my anger on trash.

It had not been easy for me to get pregnant. I needed to stay calm.

Without a word, I took off the necklace and placed it on the table.

Sienna picked it up and said, “It’s not bad, I suppose.”

“But after trash has worn it, it feels filthy.”

As soon as she finished speaking, she smashed the necklace hard against the floor.

The necklace I had treasured for years shattered at my feet.

Bianca hurried forward. “Sienna, if there’s a necklace you like, just tell Adrian what kind you want and have him take you shopping.”

“Exactly,” Adrian’s mother quickly added. “Whatever you like, Adrian will buy it for you.”

My necklace had been destroyed, yet all they cared about was what Sienna liked.

All the sincerity I had given them over the years had been wasted on people who never deserved it.

I crouched down and carefully tried to pick up the broken pieces, but a foot came down hard on my hand.

Sienna looked down at me from above. “Even the things I throw away aren’t yours to touch, filthy woman.”

Adrian kicked the broken necklace aside. “Get out already. Stop embarrassing yourself here.”

My heart tightened, and I suddenly remembered the first time I had fallen for Adrian.

A group of punks had whistled at me, said filthy things, and tried to put their hands on me.

Adrian happened to pass by. He fought all six of them alone and ended up in the hospital because of it.

While I stayed by his hospital bed, he told me, “Anyone who dares to insult you will have to go through me first.”

Now Sienna had insulted me, and he was telling me to get out.

I forced down the anger in my chest and turned to leave, but Sienna slipped off the shoe that had stepped on my hand and threw it at my back.

“I don’t want a shoe that touched trash.”

The shoe struck me hard between the shoulders, sending a sharp pain through my back.

I lowered my head and gently touched my stomach. I needed to get out first. Nothing mattered more right now.

But Sienna spoke again. “Wait.”

“There’s one more thing you need to leave behind.”

I turned back, doing my best to restrain myself. “What?”

She pointed at my stomach. “I have a friend at the hospital. She said you’re pregnant, and that the baby is Adrian’s”

“To keep you from using this baby to go after his assets later, I have the pills right here. Take them now.”
