Matteo’s men cleaned every trace of blood from the room.

Matteo collapsed onto the sofa and stared motionlessly at the ceiling

[Mia was right. He was the one who deserved to die.]

Matteo hadn’t felt this kind of pain in a long time.

The last time had been after his divorce from Ava.

Whenever he faced the empty villa, he could barely breathe.

No amount of alcohol helped.

Neither did the women who tried to get close to him.

Ava had already become woven into every part of his life.

He couldn’t accept losing her.

He finally understood that he couldn’t live without her.

That was why he had done everything he could to win her back and bring her to his side again.

Then Mia gave birth to his child.

Matteo’s mother had died young in childbirth, and Mia had nearly bled to death on the operating table.

Perhaps it was guilt toward Mia, or perhaps he wanted to punish Ava for staying out all night again and

again.

Either way, he had continued seeing Mia in secret.

When Ava found out, Matteo had been certain that she couldn’t divorce him as long as he refused to agree.

He deliberately neglected her and forced her to work like a servant, all because he wanted her to surrender

and beg him first.

But Ava never reacted.

She only looked at him with cold indifference.

Matteo tracked down the attorney who had handed the scandalous evidence to the media.

The attorney sat rigidly upright under Matteo’s icy stare and refused to say a word.

Matteo sneered.

“I’m Ava’s legal husband. I have the right to know where she is.”

“If you still refuse to tell me, you can forget about practicing law ever again.”

The attorney sneered back.

“Mr. Moretti, you’re no longer Ms. Collins’s legal husband.”

“There is no legal relationship between you.’

Matteo’s expression changed instantly.

“What did you say?”

The attorney calmly placed a document in front of him.

Matteo picked it up, his fingers nearly crumpling the pages.

“That’s impossible. I don’t believe it. This is all fake…”

He shot to his feet, drove home to retrieve their marriage certificate, and rushed to the City Clerk’s Office to verify it.

Several minutes later, Matteo walked out in a daze.

“Fake? How could it be fake?”

The storm from the day before still hadn’t stopped, and dark clouds pressed low over the city.

He walked straight into the rain.

The marriage certificate crumpled in his fist.

Matteo remembered what Ava had told him when they remarried.

“I’m giving you one last chance.”

He had destroyed that last chance with his own hands.

His legs gave out, and he dropped to his knees in the rain as water struck his face.

He lowered his head, his shoulders beginning to shake.

Through the attorney, Matteo traced a plane ticket to Melbourne.

Hope surged through him.

He immediately canceled everything, boarded his private jet, and flew to Melbourne overnight.
